With seats folded and one passenger on a 400 mile trip from Berkeley to L.A.
1. a mountain bike with basket in the trunk
2. color printer
3. DVD player
4. 3 big boxes (18x18x18)
5. 2 small boxes
6. 4 bags of clothes
7. 3 cases of soda (the floor was perfect for these)
8. small knick-knacks
9. 9 books
10. shoes
11. 3 blankets
12. four pillows

 

Road bike and race gear. With folding down the rear seats I can even close the hatch.

 

Hauled a twin mattress + boxspring + frame + bedding a couple days ago. The hatch didn't close; it looked a lot like this so I used rope to secure the hatch to the two rear tow hooks. Went about 7 miles; sun was shining and it was warm out and had all the windows down. Meant to grab a pic of the bed but I forgot. Trip was mostly downhill and I did pretty good:

 

600+ lbs of organic frozen beef from the butcher to my house 45 miles away.

 

Driving our (new to us) Prius from Colorado to Florida earlier this summer:

2 human adults
2 large rolling duffels
1 full backpack
2 computer bags with full accessories
cooler with provisions for 4 day drive
1 big box of gifted dishes (full service set: 8x dinner plates, 8x salad, 8x soup bowls, 8x side dishes, 12x teacups and saucers, 1x large serving platter all with ridiculous Americana scenes depicted)
Miscellany
1 rowdy adolescent golden retriever occupying the full back seat.

Pretty cramped, I gotta say.

4 Humans with single seat folded

2 moving boxes
1 carry on size suitcase

All this with the plastic tray removed from the back.

On earlier occasion I have hauled 30 Cu ft mulch ( 10 bags of 3 Cu ft).

 

Yesterday: a pallet

 

Just completed a 3000 mile round trip to SoCal from the Seattle area. My son and I each have a Festiva that we do projects on together so while in San Diego, I found a Ford Festiva in a wrecking yard with only 70k so I gutted the interior completely including the carpeting which is premoulded and bottom covered in sound damping material. I put the entire interior from the Festiva in my Prius, both front seats, rear bench, door panels, trim pieces, corner lights, visors, seat belt assemblies along with both of my travel bags, thermos ice chest (the big one!), two full back packs, needless to say I could not see out the rear view mirror. 48.3 mpg for the trip coming back and that was doing the speed limit on I-5 from San Diego home to Seattle.

 

6 large bags of mulch (30-40lbs each?) and 2 bags of top soil.

A 3 piece 17 foot kayak lives in my prius & all the gear.



The other day I came back from a bike ride & stopped at first the hardware store & then the grocery store... and it started raining. I didn't want my bike riding on the back, so the car had in it:

1. 17 foot, 3 piece kayak
2. my yakima roof racks with kayak cradles on it
3. many paddles, much other kayaking gear
4. 2 20-lb bags or charcoal
5. 1 road bike
6. 2 18 gallon rubber made containers.
7. a bunch of biking gear
8. 3 house plants
9. Lots of groceries.
10. window screening
11. Driver.
12. Various other miscellaneous items and bags of gear.

It stuck out the back a little bit so I used rope to keep the hatch down and the cargo inside. With a little planning, it may be possible to get the hatch closed by removing the front passenger seat, which is an easy feat by removing four bolts and unclipping three wiring harnesses.

This was for an organ buying trip and a performance in Florida. Mileage was around 44 MPG which reflects the weight, the interstate speeds, and the cold weather in Georgia. I normally manage around 50 winter and 55 to 58 summer.

 

This is what I fit into a Gen III w/ front passenger seat foward and rt rear passenger seat down....

7 - 6 foot plastic tables w/ legs folded, each about 2 inches thick....with the hatch closed !!

 

It is amazing what these things can hold isn't it?

 

I am know a member of the towing brigade towing a caravan. Only done 380 miles so far at an average of 43 mpg (UK gallons) with the van in tow.
The van "pictured below" is 19ft 8 inches overall length, 7ft 2 inches wide, 8ft 6 inches high. The unladen weight is 1792 lbs, and maximum gross weight is 2420 lbs.
It has it's own electric drive to each wheel for parking in tight spaces, or driving up to the tow bar on the car. (no reversing the car into the draw bar) This is controlled by a hand held radio control controlling the drive direction of each wheel. This means you can spin the van round in it's own length driving one wheel forwards and the other in reverse. I believe this system is illegal in the US.
The van is pulled well behind the Prius at 50 mph (the maximum legal speed limit in the UK for towing except on motorways where it is 60 mph) with no stability or braking problems, the van having it's on very efficient braking system.
