The only thing I found re:battery when I created an account is apparently the 12v, however it doesn't have info prior to '05

Judging by 12 Volt Toyota Prius Battery for 2001-2003 with installation kit, that appears to be the 12 volt. (I Googled for 28800-21050 battery.)

If it were in 04, it'd be illogical it'd be a customer pay for the HV battery since it's warranted for 8 years/100K miles.

I have to say that with the short period of time between purchase and problem, I would be suspicious of fraud. Now, I don't know if there is any way to prove this - does Toyota keep records of what codes are reported and the dates? Assuming it would have gone through the dealer...

Well, it's wierd...the service log I can access online doesn't show anything prior to 2005, I wonder why that is? That is just what a service tech told me at the counter. Toyota corporate was very stingy with what they wanted to divulge, asking me things like "Now who told you that?" But there must be things in their system that I can't access online.

Funny, I was just going to google that but you beat me to it. Thank you. Anyway, that is true, I don't think they paid for it. I think it was considered a recall. But they may have solved whatever problem they discovered in 2004 at that time, but I personally believe the model they replaced it with didn't have the recall service I have just been made aware of. I just think they will probably cop out because they can (Toyota) saying it was replaced in 2004.
I need to figure out how to break through their avoidance on the issue.

Well, 2005 is like 1921 in internet years. It's not terribly surprising that the OLDB doesn't go back farther. But if there was anything interesting, it would be more recent - so I guess that won't help. If you have access to cheap (but good!) legal help, it might be worth at least a consultation.

The only recalls I see on the 02 Prius are at Recalls - Search Results | Safercar.gov | NHTSA . If there was some "special service campaign", "limited service campaign" or TSB, I'm unaware of it, but then again, I'm the wrong guy to ask about any of those things on Gen 1 Priuses.

I'm not sure I'm completely following this ... you've found an online record of the twelve-volt battery being replaced in 2008 (a different battery from the big HV one), and in re-reading this thread I see some mention of thinking the HV battery had been replaced in 2004, but I'm not sure whether that's something you're sure of or not. From whom did you first hear that? Someone at a dealership? Is that consistently reported to you when you talk with Toyota, or do they have trouble finding a record of that also?

Before being too cynical about them trying to take advantage of you, we might wonder if something is just confusing here.

OK, we have a lot of good advice here, but, I'd like to share some more info.

P3009 means the high voltage system is somehow connecting to the rest of the car (body).

This car definitely has something wrong with it, however, because it is intermittent, finding the problem is going to be tricky. Usually when we see there codes the problem is in either the battery or transmission. If the problem was not hiding from us we could clear the code, turn the ignition to on, not ready, and see if our code comes back. At this point, all we can do is rule some things out and hope for the best.

One possibility is that the problem is in the battery. If this was the case, I would suspect corrosion growing up to the cover. This could have been disturbed when the battery guy went in there. Also, the burned wires could be the leak. The 04003-35147 kit comes with the part I posted a picture of. Performing the cleaning in the link would address both these issues.

On the other hand, it could be in the transmission. As we know, contaminated fluid has been known to set these codes. It could also be a bad stator, but I would try the fluid first.

    I would recommend the following:

    1) Change the trans fluid (make sure to use genuine Toyota T-IV fluid)
    2) Wait to see if the problem comes back
    3) Have the battery cleaned and buss bars replaced with the 04003-35147 kit.

    In that order.

I suspect you'll have fewer problems with Amazon. I also bought one via AutoZone and another one via Ecomodder and neither had problems. But I had two purchases via the PriusChat store that led to broken browser pages.

Yes to 12v in '08, and yes (from the dealership) about the traction battery in '04. I am the one who has trouble finding record of '04 on the Toyota website with user login. Definitely is confusing. That is why I have spent weeks trying to unravel details and fix whatever I become sure of along the way. There are many complexities.

Hey Pristina, I found this info (below) on the owners website FAQ, explaining why you're not seeing anything prior to '05. I would ask the dealer for a printout of any service not listed on the owners website so we can see what was actually done to the HV Battery. From what it sounds like, the HV battery was replaced in '04 (or was it just serviced?). If you can get them to do the TSB service for you, great. If not, I have to side with Avi's here.

    1) Change the trans fluid (make sure to use genuine Toyota T-IV fluid)
    2) Wait to see if the problem comes back
    3) Have the battery cleaned and buss bars replaced with the 04003-35147 kit.

You're doing good though and I'm predicting your HV battery is not bad and you're going to save some money by not having that repair done. Now, let's keep at this until we get her fixed!!!! ;)
Why are my services from past years not shown?

For most dealers, records go back to late 2004. However, in certain areas, we did not begin storing dealer repair order information until late 2007. These areas include North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Texas. Some dealers may not participate, and occasionally records are not transferred. In these instances, please contact your dealer and request to have your records printed.

The part number on the battery might tell you if it is a replacement. If you look at the sticker with the serial number on it, it has the part number as well. Also, new batteries come with three warning stickers on the battery cover where original batteries only have one.

Will I be able to see the stickers without pulling the back seat out and everything?

Thanks. I would much rather buy anything I can at the auto parts store.

I don't know if I replied to this yet, but I do plan on taking this advice. I have an appt. on Sunday morning for the tran fluid exchange and on with the dealer on Monday morning to see if they will take responsibility for the service campaign. I will also request a full past service detail.

I don't think so, I'm working on a GenI right now and will see if I can post some pictures of the label and where to find it.

i think p3009 in 1 gen prius is almost 99.9% mg2 problem, you can check mg2 temperature when driving.
try to replace atf oil twice:
1 time - full replacement (~4.7L) with pan removal and magnet clear
after 500-1000 km will passed, replace it again
    2nd time - just pour-drain without pan remove (~4.5L).
