Good Tires (winter driving)

Nokian Hakkapellitta (spelling?) is the best winter tire.

That would be Nokian WRG2. They are not as good in snow/ice as winter tires, but should be decent overall.

If you're getting uneven wear on your tires you might want to get your alignment checked before you drive around on new tires.

 

I like Michelin radial x tires that I get at SAMs club. I think they are called the michelin defender now. They are 80,000 mile tires that wear exceptionally well. Have really good grip for an all season. Only complaint is they have a bit of road noise to them, not excessive though.

 

I'm gonna get pilloried I know. But any one tried Cooper tires on their Prius. Not sure if they do the Prius size, but I have a set of Cooper's made for Sears on my old '00Buick Century, (second car) their dead quiet, ride well and wear well. Handle ok in snow. Mileage on the Century not too bad, about 27-28MPg, not bad for that big a 12 year old car with over 100K miles on the plugs/wire.

Going to need tires on the 07 Prius soon, probably before or during winter, and not all that happy with the road noise of what's on there.

 

I can second the Nokians. Whatever you get I bet you'll be satisfied as long as you don't go too cheap. Careful driving out there, can't believe it's almost time for snow.

 

Hello, I just purchased a like-new 2009 Prius and loving it! With an eye toward winter (and realizing I won't have the plow-through-snow capability ofmy former car, Subaru Outback) I'm researching studded snow tires.

Seeking advice:
1) Hankook w409 or Nokian Hakapiliita 7 (spelling is prob wrong). Both available locally. Hankooks have heavy steel studs. Hak7 have "street smart" titanium studs? Hankooks are much better price. Are Hak7s worth the difference?
2) tire pressure monitors will add another $300+. Have been told they aren't really necessary if I can live with the sensor light being on and do manual tire pressure checks.
3) am going to mount winter tires on 15" steel rims.

I am glad to find the newbie forum. I spent time this morning reading the "what new owners shoul know" thread.

I've been using Michelin Harmony tires for the last couple of years. I'm in NH and have driven through two winters on these things. They cut right through rain and snow without issue. I've been very very pleased with the performance in the snow. I don't drift or slide around at all. I've been really impressed with how they do all year long. They aren't loud and my mileage increased over the previous Yokohama all seasons (don't remember exact model) that were on the car when I bought it.

The tread has held up remarkably...Town Fair Tire kept trying to sell me on another brand, but I decided to stick with the Harmony rather than the oft-recommended Radial/Defender. They always ask me how they're performing and I give them the glowing report. They've since been telling other Prius drivers that these are a decent option.
