With respect to the Prius 2G and 3G, the correct transaxle fluid is Toyota ATF WS. Do not confuse this with the inverter/transaxle coolant, which is Toyota Super Long Life Coolant.

The purpose of the coolant is to provide liquid cooling of the inverter and transaxle. The purpose of ATF WS is to provide lubrication of the moving transaxle parts.

Just found this thread when I was searching for oil usage.

I have a 2007 Prius. I am the original owner.
Has 130,000 miles. The only things I have done are
oil, filter, tire rotation in accordance with manual. (5K miles)
    new tires when necessary.
New cabin and engine air filters (they seem to be a mouse magnet...) in accordance with manual.
I check things, like the brakes (when I rotate tires) but they don't seem to have any wear!

Only bad thing - As mentioned I change the oil every 5000 miles. I like a natural oil like Valvoline, sometimes 5W20 sometimes 5W30. Now it burns about a quart and a half in 5000 miles. Not sure why, no 'smoking', no leaks (dry garage storage.)

Still get 50 mpg in summer and 45 in winter in New England.

I think I'll change the brake fluid and coolant...

    FWIW,
    Daniel
