I checked few auto sites, the invoice price for PIP is about $38,000. A dealer offered me the white PIP Advanced for $38,888. I told them I would buy it if they could give me few hundred dollars more discount, or I leave. Surprising, they let me walk away. Does anyone think $38,888 is low enough? Thanks!
Well, you're in San Jose. I'm in the east bay. Last night we got the base model plug-in for about 1500 under invoice. Maybe they are trying to clear the base models, but on the lot, there were a lot more advanced cars.
When people say MSRP, do they include the dealer delivery fees? So is MSRP whatever is on the window sticker? Or is MSRP the $32K quoted on the toyota website?
Where I live you pay MSRP. If you walk, you'd get at most $500 off MSRP. Around these parts a base PHV is$42,122 all in, and the advanced model is $46,881 all in. Let me tell you what I think of the price...
The PIP is in inventory more than 80 days. I think the dealer wants to clear the inventory too. I wonder why the PIP was not selling as good as it should be.
When I went in for my 10K service (Long Island), I talked to the Sales Manager and he said that they were having troubles selling PIPs. I told him that the sales people should focus in on how many miles people commute and possibly sell them based on that. With the electric rates here though, I think I figured out the cost per electric mile at about $.059. If you drive a regular Prius carefully, you can get about $.07/mile, which is about an 18% difference. But, the cost of the vehicle is much more. After reading through PC, it also seems like the PIP gets better mileage in HV mode than the regular Prius which would offset the cost differential. I'll have to mention that to him when I go in for my 15K service.
Honestly, I think some people think (incorrectly) it they might get stranded when elec. runs out, or too weak power, or extra cost is too high. The 13mi range is really impractical and does not make that much difference versus the regular Prius. And the 40k model get you into some serious competition from other brands and eliminates some of the budget minded consumers. But after tax credit, the premium on the base model was acceptable to get into the HOV lanes; that made the difference for us.
How do you calculate the $/mile on EV? Or how much is the per kwh rate in your area? I am trying to understand how much it would cost here in Bay area ( I see that rates are around $0.13/kwh for first tier and 0.15 for next tier)
I will blame the economy since PIPs are not cheap, but I notice the PCs are not too many either. I expect PC should be sold more. The regular Prius still remains very strong.
well, the regular prius is the prime mover. these other iterations are targeted towards smaller markets who didn't want the regular.
I don't know if this is correct, but, 4.4 KW battery x $0.13/KWH = $.572 to go 13 miles or $.044 per mile. At the $.15 KWH rate it would be $.051 per mile. I don't know what the average KW charge is if the totally depleted. This is just a WAG on my part! Really, when you talk about MPG or eMPG it really comes down to cost/mile. So far, from fuelly, my cost per mile has been $.070 for 12,656 miles on my 2012 Prius 3. So, if your gas costs less in your area or your electric rates are low, you are ahead of the game. Also, if you own a PIP and you can charge up at work for free, then this also reduces your cost per mile.
One dealer near me (Beaverton Toyota) is advertising on their website all PIP Advanced models at $2000 off MSRP. The least expensive ones are $38,285. That is before TTL. So if your $38,888 is a before TTL, it looks like it might be possible to get a lower price. But, of course, prices vary by market and so it may not be possible in your market. No dealers near me are advertising much off MSRP for the PIP base. Have any of you seen dealers advertising good deals on the PIP base? If so, could you post which dealer?
Yes, the price $38,888 was before TTL. I was surprised they let me walk when I asked for $500 off. I bought my regular Prius in Dec 2011. I paid below invoice because the dealer wanted to clear the 2011 inventory. I may wait for few more months to see if they have clearance.
