2007 Prius Multi Function Display Failure

    I have a 2007 Prius and the MFD started to work intermittently and now has died. It is an 86110-47230. Can anyone tell me if it more likely the MFD unit itself died or does the wiring in the dash sometimes go bad. Everything I have read suggests the MFD. Toyota wants $110 for diagnosis fee. I don’t think they deserve anything. My backup cam doesn’t work since the MFD died, and that is a safety issue and should be covered under some type of Fed safety regulations on a five year old car, but apparently not. That is bogus.
    My battery tests good. Wiring connections on the back are connected well. Before I buy a used MFD and install it myself, I want to get an idea of the odds that it’s the MFD or wiring that is the problem.

    From posts here, and Luscious Garage, which is what I assume you were reading, I would say that unless your car was in an accident, there is a very small chance that it would be a wiring issue. Car harnesses are pretty tough and reliable. Printed circuit boards in vibrating cars are far more suspect.

    Great, I wasn't sure if there was another known issue. If there isn't, I'm pretty safe gambling on a replacement (used) MFD to solve my problem. Much appreciated. Thank you.

    I have a 2008 Prius & my MFD has similar problems- some buttons in the center area of the screen stopped working or work randomly. Do I have to replace the whole unit or can I just replace the circuit board?

    I don't think you will find anything but entire units. Here is what a tear down of the MFD entails:
    Prius MFD
    A little daunting for most people. Problems with the touch screen have been seen more in hot weather. If the car gets hot when parked, that would be the first thing to remedy with reflector screen, shade, etc.

    Take your Prius to Mellor's, mellor's automotive. They have done good work at reasonable prices for other Prius owners.

    Unbelievable low prices for sure! From the web site:
    Update: well I spoke too soon. Just got a flyer from a local Toyota dealer. They have coupons for $25 oil change, free battery test, free code scan, and "beat it by 20%" if the customer bring in a written estimate from an independent shop.

    Just a quick update. Toyota wanted $110 just to determine if my Multi Function Display was bad. From there I assumed I would take the ride to poor town. With the knowledge from this site, I was pretty sure the MFD was dead. Armed with this info, I purchased a used MFD with the exact model number from EBAY for $215. And... It works!! I know it may not work forever, but it was a cheap, pretty easy to install fix. I am very glad to have the control functions back and the backup camera. Watch out, there are a bunch of different variations of the MFD, so get the exact one. This site is awesome, and gave me the knowledge I needed to tackle the problem myself. Thank you.

    What are your options if you can't do the repair yourself? The MFD on my 09 Prius is going out. Been going on for 3 wks and I'm not at a 2nd dealer. they have had the car for 2 days and of course, it doesn't go out when they have it. Nonetheless, their quote to replace it is $2k. I can't afford that and it's unreasonable, especially since this has been an issue since 04-05 and Toyota has elected to not fix it.

    Any suggestions on how to get this replaced outside of Toyota for a reasonable cost?

    Hi. My mfd on my 07 failed. I asked the dealer for a repair quote but I think they quoted replacing the radio and not the display. Maybe dealers really need a diagnosis fee to know what is broken.
    Does the OP or anyone else have updates?

    My update: I took the dash apart last night and took the display out. I wanted to verify the part numer and also look for any obvious failures. I found no issues an did confirm my pn before reassembling the dash.
    On repowering the car I was surprised by the wipers and blinkers (tip: check control stalk positions after putting everything together) but also the fact that my screen appears to work now.
