2012 PII, considering an aftermarket backup camera. Is there a significant risk of electronic problems or "gremlins" after such an installation by an experienced shop? I understand from previous posts that there is a video input on the 2012, but it's not a standard RCA connection.. any advice?
Does anyone else know anything about interfacing an added backup camera to the 2012 TWO's 6.1" display?
The Two (not II anymore) has the same Display Audio 6.1" Touchscreen as the Three, but lacks backup camera, Nav, Entune, SeriusXM, HD Radio, and voice commands. I don't know if the screen is LCD or something else.
The electrical modifications are minor... I'd be more concerned with new rattles & vibrations caused by removing all those plastic panels. Seems the Prius is pretty noisy with lots of plastic creaking noise already- I'm afraid to pull any panels on my car at this point.
It's a 2012 you are talking about. Your best bet is to go to Toyota Information Service, pay your 15 bucks, and download the prints for your car, if they are even available yet. This will give you the pin out info you need!
even if the nav radio has the inputs for a rear view cam, the BCM may need to be reflashed so the the screen goes to the cam when in reverse.
Nevermind. An unexpected decent tradein opportunity also provided a chance to upgrade to something with a sunroof, which makes the spouse happier. That automatically came with a backup camera. But paying $15 to TIS and adding a backup cam to a Two would have been cheaper.
Wow, did you trade to a Three in just one day? Besides, I don't think anyone knows if the proprietary vid input on the Two stock display would allow for a backup cam. I've been barking up that tree for a while now. I've considered buying an Ottonavi, Advent, or Rosen unit, but don't wanna shell out that dough just for a backup cam. I could care less about a nav.
Yesterday's question was part of the deliberation process. The decision and transaction happened this afternoon.
Going into the diagnostics on the 2012 II head unit shows a greyed out camera indicator. An assumption would be that it does allow for a Toyota factory backup camera.
FWIW here are images of the 2012 II head unit: priuschat.com/forums/private-sales/105388-2012-prius-ii-headunit.html Shows model # and connections (notice no RCA inputs). Also, I did check to see if Toyota pre-wired for camera. Unlike my FJ which seems to be pre-wired for everything, not so on Prius. Running the camera harness should be easy if you take your time and use the proper plastic panel/molding remover tool. My research so far indicates the camera is model # 86790-47040.
I'm also very interested in this so if anyone has done it, please post! Also, what is the wire part # and where does the wire go through the car?
