Door lock fails out-of-state

If this is truly happening the way you say, I suspect that there is some electronic device interfering with the key fob operation. When you visit Kittery, do you take something with you that you don't normally carry? Maybe a cell phone, gps device, radar detector, tablet or notebook pc, etc?
Could there be something at or near your son's house causing this?
Have you gone on trips to other locations? Has the problem still occurred there?
Are you certain this never occurs at home?
Just some possibilities to think about.

It took this fancy fob to train my spouse that when we travel, her key needs to be kept in her pocket, not in the car.

Long ago, mom told a story about the honeymoon road trip. Besides his spare key, dad made sure she had a spare key too. A ways out of town, after wiping all the paint off the window, his main key accidentally went into the trunk along with the cleaning rag. And the spare keys, stored in the luggage.

 

Did you buy new? If yes and your salesman didn't show this to you, all I can do is shake my head. Mine did.

 

We have a 2007 Prius. When I use the FOB or the door panel to lock the car, the doors lock but the back compartment, the trunk , does not stay locked. i can open it by pushing the handle....without unlocking it.
Obviously this is not good. What do I do to fix it?

 

After 3 years my wife still wants to leave her pocketbook in the car when we go out to dinner. As soon as I try to lock the door and get the beep she just fusses under her breath as she retrieves her pocketbook, or most time now just the key fob.

 

It sounds like the lock solenoid for the trunk needs be checked and possibly replaced.

Before you order any parts, check your 12V battery voltage. There are reports of people having trouble with random doors not locking that were resolved by replacing an underperforming 12V battery. Just do a search on PriusChat and you'll find more than you ever wanted to know about the 12V battery and the problems attributed to it. If the 12V battery voltage is low or the battery is 5 years old, I'd replace it before replacing any solenoids.

There are a number of places selling genuine Toyota parts online at discounts from dealer prices. A search within PriusChat will turn up several sites that people here have used and are happy with.

 

The solenoid would be inside the door frame. The interior trim would have to be removed in order to find it.

Your local mechanic should be able to check this out and determine whether it is a problem with the lock solenoid or not, or possibly the 12V battery. He should be able to find a replacement solenoid if this is the problem.

 

Do you have the Smart Key System option? If so, that is what is supposed to happen. The hatch has a detector just like the doors.

Is this with SKS? Did the SKS button under the steering wheel get pushed in? All doors, or just the driver door not working? The door lock actuators can fail, several posts here about fixing those. How is the 12V battery? If the battery is low, the door locks may not work.
