I don't think the time of year has any real impact. The bigger issue is supply gluts due to economic slowdowns coincident with huge production capacity coming on stream primarily from China, factor in the order of magnitude drop in raw silicon price,, the price of panels keeps going down. I am now seeing panels close to .$50/watt. Can prices drop still further? Maybe, but it now getting cheap enough not to matter much,, they aren't (can't) keep going down in orders of magnitude without nearing zero. Unlike computers PV Has a physical presence that can't, barring technology breakthroughs, get smaller, or them much more efficient.

Without knowing details, I cannot comment on the installed price. Do remember, panel prices are only a portion of the install coast. In addition you have inverters, labor, installation hardware etc all of which has alocal supply and demand quotient. If ydont Ike the price, shop elsewhere, but buying strictly on price for a PV system is false economy IMHO. What would matter tome is the quality of the installations and the quality of the components, and the rep of the installer.

I don't have any real opinon,, $6/ watt before tax credits is not out of the ball park, but check with other installers if you feel the price is out of line. ((I don't do grid tie installs so I can't speak to the current retail installed prices).

Personally, I would run, not walk away from that deal. I would never point panels to the north. You don't want to go past 270 degrees. Given your location and proposed orientation of the array, that system can expect to produce 3285 kWh in a year. If you were able to point it due west, you increase the amount to 3585 kWh, and a due south pointing gives you 3849 kWh.

 

I would skip it, or get bids from other solar installers to see if they can come up with a better design. I'm kinda surprised that a reputable installer would even think of such a system.

What is the size and configuration of the existing system (type & number of panels, inverter(s) used, orientation of panels, etc)? Are you out of roof space to expand the existing system?
