That's why I just love this board..

Glancing at it I noticed the thread on the Aux input. Been struggling with the FM modulator tricks., just to run the audio signals from a DVD player into the car's sound system. My wife's $14999 2006 Saturn Ion has an Ipod plug (she refused a 2006 Prius), so I am really jealous. All I want is a plug to get sound to my car speakers., don't really care about the rest, and want to do it CHEAPLY. thank you Galaxee, Dan and Castlecain, and all the rest for the work...I knew someday one of you hard Prius cases would get around to doing this..If in my travels I do happen to find a way to easily and cheaply route sound to my speakers, I will pass it on.

    Regards
    and Merry Christmas to all

    Thanks for staying with this.
Ouch! 1500.00! Well, looks like that possible avenue is out.
OK, well, sounds like the tech is on the problem. Could you ask
him in the mean time who makes the standard head unit? If it's Panasonic,
as I have heard, maybe buying the Audiovox wired unit interface
for Panasonic and adapting the right connector for the Prius is the
answer for XM, and also a modification to that interface for pure
aux input could be made. I am sure the Vais unit has a lot of
R&D associated with the price but I am still resisting paying
299.00 for it. I certainly want aux-in AND XM-in eventually.
I may buy the Vais unit eventually, but they are not now available
for shipment. Here is a simple solution and low price unit for
    aux-in only http://www.hotmp3gear.com/Auxinputadapter.htm
but I have not seen any comment from anyone who has installed it.
There are another couple of adaptors on the market including the
Pac Aux-in box selling for around 100.00. I wish there were review
of them by some users here. Here is another http://www.logjamelectronics.com/blitztoymlink1v1.html
so, the technology is less expensive from some sources.
Although the last link does not specify the Prius, it says any
Toyota 6 disk changer port works. I want to see the radio
    schematic first before buying anything.

Here are interface links.... more interfaces, Caveat Emptor!
Some say all Toyota, some specify non-Prius, some don't
explain fully. However, the list (also search ebay for sellers
under Ipod interface) is longer, Google Toyota Ipod or Toyota
    XM or Toyota Aux-in interface.
What is obivious, is that a lot of people make this technology
at some low prices, but we on this list don't have the information
yet to risk trying some of them.

Which sound system do you have in your Prius? I, too, wanted a simple aux in solution. I've heard IPODs using an fm modulator in other cars and they sounded terrible!

It's different with the Prius, at least in my experience. I have a 2005 with the 6 disc JBL changer and includes FM diversity. I am using the highly criticized FM modulator method to send the signal from my portable pioneer xm2go and the sound is flawless. There is no static whatsoever and the sound is fine and the signal is strong. The xm antenna is just sitting on the dash. I have to believe that the fm diversity of the JBL system makes the difference.

well for christmas he installed a harman/kardon drive+play for my ipod using a hard-wired fm modulator. we tried it using the broadcast fm signal to comapre and it is much better with the hard wiring. however, he still wants to try running the signal through by hijacking the tape player for even clearer sound, so he is still going to be getting all the diagrams and he'll ask for the standard system diagram along with the upgraded sound package diagram.

Here is one last link for Christmas day. All the techs who are reading
this thread might be able to start to understand some of the specifics
about our Prius radio. One thing I noticed is that the Solara and Prius
use the same factory XM kit, but for Toyota products in this link, the
Solara and Prius are not mutually compatible. What's up with that...?
we techs usually cross reference compatibility by what works mutually.
So, for what it's worth, check this site.

The audio in is simple now, if you don't need anything displayed on your MFD touchscreen.

I got a an AUX-BOX with the AB-TOYT cable for the Prius. Installed in one day. No problems.

    Try: http://www.cardomain.com/item/PACAUXBOX

Don't forget the TOYT cable. You need it.

    ----------

For video options, I am big on www.gnetcanada.com. Products work great and there is good support.

In fact, I have one for sale if you want. Two video inputs, can be used with any video signal like DVD, or a computer, or a back up camera, and it doesn't use your audio port so you can plug in your iPod or XM separately. Email or message me if you want one and seriously check out the AUX-BOX. Works great.

So was he saying the manufacturer is Harman Becker or that they
licence the technology to Pioneer, Alpine and Panasonic etc.?

    http://www.harmanbecker.com/harmanBecker/w...jsp?language=US

Above website gives no specifics on what radio systems they make.

    Thanks for your help,
    Rod

Ryan, which factory radio do you have, the one with or without the 6-disk changer? If it is with the change, did it require you to disable it?

I have the radio without the six CD changer. (No cassette player, no NAV.)

The AUX-BOX has a Y-cable. It plugs into your CD-changer port on the back of the radio and then you plug your CD-Changer into this Y-cable so you can keep that functionality. Haven't tried it myself though. The audio in is enabled by hitting your "Disc" button on the radio twice so it switches to a CD Changer screen, so I assume their intent is to keep your CD Changer capability.

    Newbie question:

What are the aux-in possiblities for an 06 (without the aux-in option, obviously)? Specifically, I am interested in connecting my ipod. Here is what I've gathered so far from this forum and others:

Vaistech AIC-100i: Vaistech says that ipod track info is not displayed and that they don't currently have 06 compatible units available for shipment. Ipod interface functionality limited (access only to playlists); does have aux-in to operate Ipod manually.

Icelink plus: Dension site says it's compatible; limited functionality (only first 5 playlists accessible); no aux in to operate Ipod manually.

Aux-box: PAC says its compatible with 06; the place I bought one from said that it could not be installed in the 06 and refunded my money.

Drive+Play: Looks great; FM modulation only option without aux-in.

Coastaletech aux audio: No price on the web site; no way to order it on their order form; no reference to 2006 and they don't answer my emails -- even if I could order it I wouldn't because I couldn't count on a refund if it were incompatible. They must not want my money.

    IS THAT ALL?

What about an aftermarket head unit with an aux-in and the PAC SWI-X steering wheel control device to control non-Ipod functions? Is that even a possibility?

okay- so the AUXBOX works with the '05 prius? because it only says '04 on the website.

I just want to confirm before I buy.

Could anyone confirm this please? I have an '05 that I'd like to add an aux input to. Much appreciated... thanks in advance!

Also, can anyone tell me what exact components I would need to add an aux input to a 2005 Prius? I have no changer/nav/etc. I am currently looking to use the Aux-Box along with the AB-TOY and AB-TOYT cables. Are both cables necessary?

Confusing aint it? AUX-BOX and AB-TOYT is all you need.

I have an '05 with no changer, nav, etc. and it works fine. I would recommend flipping the dip switch for louder volume, when you get it.

    Good luck.

Thanks...you're the first one to actually put it down with a definitive answer!! So where does the AB-TOYT cable plug into, is it that unused plug in the back of the head unit, or do you actually remove a cable and install the AB-TOYT cable? I'll probably just go ahead and buy it because it seems like we have the same models, CD player without the changer and without the Nav. Thanks again!!

    Okay- one more thing:
Is there a way to have the aux box with 2 inputs, one for the iPod and the other for XM radio?

I've seen RCA splitters before. Its do-able. You just can't have two input signals at the same time.
