This is a much discussed, known problem. Toyota has two TSB's out on this for repair but most dealerships require either a DTC code to be set or be able to duplicate the issue before repair.

Typically this happens when car started, driven a short distance, shut off before completion of warmup cycle and then cold-soaked overnight. There have been other reports that do not fit the above scenario, though.

Search on here for engine knocking and you will find multiple threads.

Welcome aboard and join the knock club. Be sure to read the threads on the issue and be squeaky wheel at the dealer(s) to have the T-SBs implemented.

What does the TSB entail? Has the fix been implemented on the newer models?

It has happened to me 3x when it was cold......
Took it to the dealer because I'm on vacation this week and they said they couldn't do anything because they were not able to recreate it and that no codes were tripped.
Damn..... Even though there's a TSB on it. I'm very disappointed......
Oh well......it's still a good car.....not sure what else I can do....
Lucky for me that I live in So Cal so temperatures under 40 degrees is rare......
