700 Mile Club

They must really have some perfect roads over there for this kinda thing I have never been to Japan but I'm guessing by the fact that they seem to hold all the records, either they all get free gas, and have no jobs, or they are being paid to break records to showcase what this vehicle is really capable of when pushed to the limits of frugality.

 

The fact that you are getting that kind of economy with freeway legs included is pretty outstanding, F8L.

I've got about 250 miles on my current tank and am nursing >59 mpg on the display. I don't see a 700 mile tank in my near future because it's darn hard to hyper mile during rush hour commutes.

Your economy driving Cali freeways is crazy. Wait, now I am envisioning the OJ chase scene --- doesn't seem so unbelievable now.

I guess the same. In Japan they surely have perfect roads, and lower speed limits than the ones in US.
I had a very hard work to keep 119 mpg in a 35 km long trip, and I really drove carefully and in perfect conditions of weather and traffic. So the only thing is that they must have perfect roads that results in fewer energy loss. Here roads are not that bad, but they aren't perfect. When I get into a very good road I have the feeling that FE gets much better, pushes are much shorter and glides much....much longer...! Have a great hypermiling you all, all over the US, guys!

You need to find some 1988 CRX-HF 13" steelies that take the P165 tires, inflate to Max PSI + 40 (LOL), rip out all the seats in your car as well as the spare tire. Entertainment provided by an IPOD (no radio for you!), drive from dusk to dawn and have an engine block heater to keep engine warm during your Down time. Oh, and a 2 liter bottle....for "nature" calls.

 

A friend, who is also a member of this site did this tank a few years back in a 2007 Prius(I think). Not sure if he ever comes on here any longer, but he could tell you more. His user name was bestmapman.

Yes you could - but...

If you let the Prius run out of gas - but the fuel pump inside the Prius' fuel tank is designed to be cooled by the fuel in the gasoline tank - while the fuel pump won't breakdown immediately without fuel - running the fuel pump without fuel in the tank for any extended period of time will risk overheating the fuel pump if the outside temperatures are really really hot. Once you run out of gas - the Prius will run on electrical power only ( with a range of less than a mile in most cases) - if the Prius traction batteries get depleted and the Prius is turned off then you'll need to recharge the traction batteries before restarting her up again.

FYI: To increase the range of a Prius for a marathlon a hypermiler may overfill the gas tank of a Prius by up to 1 gallon (12.9 gallons instead of 11.9 gallons) - this extra gasoline is stored in the EVAP canister/pressure release valve of the fuel tank. However, there is a a risk that overfilling the Prius gas tank can screw up the EVAP canister and its solenoid/valves if the gas/fuel dries up and gums up the EVAP canister/valve/solenoid unit so the day you overfill by one gallon of gas is the day you should burn that *extra* gallon of gas or you will be increasing the risk of messing up the Prius' EVAP canister.

depending on your running/average/overall fuel efficiency your theoretical maximum range may vary..

11.9 gallons * 50 mpg = 0595 miles
11.9 gallons * 55 mpg = 0655 miles
11.9 gallons * 60 mpg = 0714 miles
11.9 gallons * 65 mpg = 0773 miles
11.9 gallons * 70 mpg = 0833 miles
11.9 gallons * 75 mpg = 0893 miles
11.9 gallons * 80 mpg = 0952 miles
11.9 gallons * 85 mpg = 1011 miles

I managed to squeak out a 700 mile tank today. 704 miles, 10.0 gals, 70.4 mpg. Yes, I P&G as much as possible, but I wasn't really trying for a 700 goal until I noticed there were three pips left and over 600 miles on the trip meter.
