Original battery I presume?

 

Original everything, including the little 12 volt battery.

I replaced the front brakes at 234,000 miles.

 

Wow!!!

 

I'm almost at 224k with no problems to report. Only thing is she's burning almost 1/2 qt every 1000 mile or so using Mobil1 5w-30 Ep syn. Wondering if If I should start using 10w-30 instead.

 

My 2006 Prius has 240,000 and running just great. No brake work, no major issues. I get 53 miles/gallon on highway going 63 miles per hour between Jacksonville and Atlanta on I10 and I75. HV battery did start showing infrequent ability to keep a good charge so I opened up the battery and simply checked each cell's voltage (all equal) and bolt tightness -- found a few that needed about 1/8 of a turn to be tight. Saw some corrosion but did not clean. After that, the battery is back to normal with keeping a healthy charge. What a great machine!! I figure that I must have saved more than $30,000 in gas and maintenance cost so far. I plan on going as far as it will go without major expenses. Our 2004 just finished at 200,009 miles on our way home Monday.

Original battery.
Replaced the 12v once.
Kept up with recommended maintenance schedule.
47-50 mpg.

Issues:
1) Not built for dirt road driving. Rear-view mirror and rear spoiler are loose and rattle, but we decided they were too expensive to fix. Lots of scratches on both sides.

2) We thought we were having a problem with the battery and/or air conditioner. Two years and three dealers couldn't figure out the problem. Then our instrument display panel started failing. When we had that replaced -- the a/c and acceleration were fine again!

3) When we got it, blue Prii were rare cars. Now they're everywhere.

 

We have a 2004 Prius and a 2011 Insight .. the old Prius is by far a better car than the new Insight.

 

We are at about 220K miles on our '05
1) Did you replace the HV battery pack? Yes, at 190K miles replaced with a used pack
2) Did you replace the 12v lead-acid battery? Yes at around 200K
3) Did you replace the hybrid transaxle fluid? Yes, once
4) Did you replace the brake pads? Yes, 3 times
5) Your lifetime MPG (if available)? Don't know but we still get 45-50 mpg
6) How often do you change your oil? What brand / product did you use? 5-7K no preference

We go to Lake Tahoe a lot. Sea level to 8k' then down to 5k' in 60 miles. Then back home. The battery works hard and cycles way down then back up. I think this has attributed to the batterys early demise. It wears the right front brake pads way faster than the left. The info button on the steering doesn't work. Need to do struts soon. Otherwise it's great and I expect to go beyond 300k.

I have just passed 255k miles in my '05. I still original everything except front brakes (changed at 242k) Still getting 46mpg, changing oil every 5k miles, I add about 1 qt every 2k miles, using 10w40 during the summer and high mileage 5w30 in the winter. Tight gaskets, no leaking, just some cylinder blow by. Strongly suggest staying with the low rolling resistance tires by Firestone or Michelin (10% better gas mileage). I live in PA, with our share of big hills. Mileage takes a hit, for sure and the battery gets pretty low and "overflows" on the way down. No sign of quitting or even slowing down, either.

 

Currently my Prius (2004) is approaching 260,000 miles (258,000 apprx, currently). I had to replace the front brake pads that were getting low at around 235,000 miles (first time replacement). Change oil when the maint light indicates it is time. Same battery and everything else (except tires of course). Have had a diag code start up about 60,000 miles ago, indicating poss cat. converter but a mechanic buddy suggested I may just need to swap out the upstream AND downstream O2 sensors for new ones and that should do it.

Other than the latter, this car has easily been the most remarkable car I've ever owned. I've never had a car with this kind of mileage AND it just seems to want to keep going!

Yo Devil's Advocate!...since you regularly haul Dirt Bikes and Street bikes with your Prius, could you tell us a little about what kind of hitch and trailer arrangement you have and how much it weighs?
I could only find a 2" class I hitch reciever (EcoHitch) for my 2012 Prius with a 200 lb tongue weight and 2,000 lb load capacity. I was wondering if and how I could haul a 330 lb KTM 690 around with it? How much do your bike and trailer weigh and what is the weight rating on your hitch?

Recalls for a coolant pump, steering column and accel . pedal. Replaced another pump at our cost. Replaced 4 shocks and front end parts and had it aligned.

Amazing stuff but I think some can do more to alleviate wear and reduced risk on on the PSD by replacing the oil with the genuine only every 30k miles. Very easy to do.

Another is using quilty oil. Im glad Toyota is making a very nice 0-20w for the new Prii cars. If you can use that grade I would and it's a quality tested Synthetic based on oil reports better then M1's blend.

Keep the car away from the sun. Protecting and keeping it in the cool helps greatly in oxidation and keeps the battery cooler.

 

Hey Folks! Better late than never as I am checking in with ~203k on the odometer. I still have the original HV battery but only changed the little battery once back in the summer of 2008 when I only had 42,000 miles. I had the front brakes changed at 150,000 and tomorrow I need an inspection so I'll have the rears checked. I have always used synthetic and I have changed the PSD oil twice so far (due for a change now). I had all the TSB's tended to and just have performed normal maintenance. When I had a tuneup at Toyota at 120k I had them change the serpentine belt. I'll have that looked at tomorrow as well.

This is by far the most reliable vehicle I have ever owned. I just got a new set of tires (Michelin MXV4) and these tires suit the vehicle extremely well. They have the best traction (dry or wet) of any tire I have used on the Prius. I am planning a trip from NY to FL and I have no qualms about traveling in a car with over 200k for such a long trip.

 

I last reported at 224K back in July, I am now at 332K. My o5 is doing great! I do about 130 miles a day, averaging 52mpg while driving 70-75 mph. Running it with M1 Ep oil and filter, with changes every 6k. Like I said in my last post I add 1/3 to 1/2 qt every two weeks or so yet, I am loving this car. NO REPAIRS, only the usual routine maintenance. I have Penzoil Ultra 5-30 going in next. We'll see how she burns it!

 

That's still great, but did you mean 232k?

So you are running a regular oil, or is it a synthetic?

 

My 2005 Prius just passed 270,00 miles. I have not had any major issues, just the usual maintenance (oil, tires, fluids, brakes) and have not replaced any batteries so far. I used to get better gas mileage (46-50) but I must be driving more aggressively because I now get 45-47 mpg. I do a lot of traveling between our ranch and San Diego (~300 miles one-way) so most of the miles have been on I-5. I average 70-75 mph on the interstate (not the most ideal speed for gas mileage). I change the oil every 4-5,000 miles with 5-30 Castroil. The last service at the Toyota dealership I was told I need rear brake service and throttle body service. I live in the country on a 2 mile dirt road so changing filters often is something I always do.
I am considering buying a Prius plug-in hybrid because we live off the grid and we produce a lot of excess electricity that for 8 months of the year goes to ground. I could be using this to charge the extra set of batteries. I don't plan to retire the Prius yet. My husband drives my old 2002 Prius (only 265,000 miles) and is considering taking over my 2005. In fact we have 3 Toyota vehicles (the third is a 95 T-100 $WD). Between the three Toyotas we have over 800,000 miles. I am sold on Toyota cars and trucks. As a ranch vehicle we drive a 1976 Landcruiser whose odometer hasn't worked for 10 years so who knows how many miles we've logged.
