The plates can be re-sold and there are companies that buy and re-sell them. Official site: DVLA Personalised Registrations - Buy private number plates direct from the DVLA. From £255 fully inclusive Their auctions page: Next Sale An example of a company trading in vanity plates: New Reg are cheapest for DVLA Number Plates When I moved here (Maine, USA) I was absolutely stunned to find that the USA doesn't have an open market in vanity plates.

I told her it is a great fun little car to drive and it gets great MPG !! That seemed to satify her suspicions. She said someone is always trying to sneak something obscene past them and they are always suspicious of any that start with the letters F U. ;-).

I like the Rocky and Bullwinkle one! New York doesn't allow symbols on vanity plates, just letters, numbers, and spaces.
