Does anyone know what the maxium replacement width I can install on the stock 17inch rims? Original Equipment Size: 215/45-17 I would really like to get 225's on or higher
The only reason I ask this question is because back in the day I use to have an 87 Monte Carlo SS and the tire shop mentioned to me during my tire pricing that I could go widder on my stock rims... Now you might ask, why not go to a tire shop and ask... I don't plan on buying just any tires, especially the ones some tire shop would be pushing, so I would feel bad using them for information. And really then what would be the point of you guys sitting on a forum.... to just watch questions and not respond?
10mm over the OEM tire width shouldn't be a problem on the stock 17" rims. I recently replaced the stock P205/70SR15 tires on my CRV with P215/70SR15 tires- absolutely no problems whatsoever. The guy at the tire shop told me going 10mm over is quite common.
The place where you intend on buying your tires will know for sure. It's their job. They're tire people. After talking to a couple shops you'll probably have more info than you know what to do with. . IMHO: It's just a 17" rim, not a 17"rim on a Prius. All 17" rims that style should accept the same range of tires. You're biggest concern might be type of tire: comfort, durability, traction, LRR, performance, price, etc. Many threads here about tires.
A tire size calculator is a useful tool: Tire Size Calculator - tire & wheel plus sizing It is recommended you stay within 3% of the OEM tire diameter/height.
