Funny but I always expected there would be lot of them -- because they drive a lot they want a nice comfortable car with good MPG. I think many of the BMW and Audi trade-ins are those types of folks. And even with low %EV its not bad. Even the milage king Dru with 40K miels and 25% EV, is still getting 61.16MPG overall.. so it still beats anything else on the road. If you are going to do 40K miles a year, I cannot think of a better car than the Volt.

 

I guess that is why we look at data after predictions. I am not convinced that enough data is in yet, but it appears that the current drivers are not self selecting one way or the other. The leaf data is definitely skewing toward lower mileage drivers, but... they may simply be using other cars.

My brother would be one of those low utilization customers, being in sales with many long trips and many days without pluging in. There is also the desire of a locking trunk. He ended up downgrading from a infiniti to a Camry hybrid. Perhaps a future lincoln mkz energi will fit needs better or a NS/4. I would not expect 40K drivers to choose the volt, but hey, I have no idea what they choose to drive. The demographic data is interesting though.

 

In a post analysis view.. the fact that its seems like a full cross section of the population is itself interesting. If the car was only being purchased by "Greenies", then one might expect a much higher EV%.. Contrary to what some of the volt-bashers here on PC like to suggest, this data actually suggest, albeit indirectly, that the Volt has broader mass appeal. Its not just people worried about efficiency, emissions or some green-motivation.


I sometime think people bashing the volt for price are really just jealous, with a mix set of feeling stemming from the fact they of cannot afford the volt, they want the most efficient/greenest car, and are subconsciously worried they made the wrong choice.

 

USB, very good point. With all the mileage being racked up by the Volt, there has to be and increase in gasoline consumption too. Electrical consumption, as you pointed out, also increases. depending where one lives, their electrical bill increases too. Common sense rule.

What is the basis for your assertion that all the miles means "there has to be an increase in gasoline consumption".. I don't know a single volt owner (from the fororums) that said anything about their gas usage being close to to same let alone more. The volt owners had other cars that were replaced.. and unless they changed their driving patterns their miles on gas would go down. With 63% of all volt miles on EV.. that is a large shift for the owners away from gas. Even if they had a prius, as many did, the volt would probably be a reduction in gas (less than 1% of volt owners are averaging < 50MPG)

Yes it means increases in electricity, but it means more US money staying in the US.. Furthermore in the largest volt buying states (like Cali, Texas, NY), or for those buying green power, it means less overall CO2 and other pollution. With regard to cost, we all get to choose where we put our money... Many people pay a "hybrid premium" to get clearn more efficient cars. But at the national average for eletricity is a net savings. And even in crazy places like Cali, it can be much cheaper if the owner can qualify for time-of-day use and different power rates.

Just noticed your title underyour name says "100mpg electric"? what does that mean? Does that mean you have a PHEV kit now?

Something to think about for real world, these look like they include everyone

61.9% ev miles

For a large sample group for self selection we get volts stat with 74.2% electric miles and 36.25 MPGcs, 66.32 MPGe. I'm not sure how to back out MPGcs from the onstar data.

Those are big numbers. fueleconomy.gov a smaller sample gets 160.1 mpg on the 2012, which is higher than the 140 mpg gas ignoring electricity on volts stats.

 

Don't put too much into MPGe on voltstats, it's based on a fixed 93MPGe for EV miles.

I think GM is using the US fleet average of 22mpg to calculate gallons saved.
