Great Central Valley of California: Regular = $0.54 per Liter ($2.15 per gallon). Still extremely underpriced by European standards or $1.25 per Liter ($5.00 gallon).

People continue to substitute oil for knowledge and use acceleration or decceleration (brakes) to drive, not strategy. Speeds average 130 kmph (80 mph) on freeways. Those driving slower are looked upon as safety hazards.

There are many discussions on Priuschat: feather the pedal, anticipate lights, use cruise control, etc., that increase fuel economy. Want to cut the price of fuel in one-half? Double your efficiency.

This past weekend I wes back for a High School Reunion. One of my classmates has been living in England for the past 8 years and states that actually the difference between the price of gas in Europe and the US is the amount of tax that a particular government applies. In other words, the world oil price per barrel is the world oil price per barrel no matter where it comes out of the ground.

 

Maybe so; but conspiracy theories are much more fun. At my favorite gas station, on my way home from work Thurs, 87 octane was 2.07. Friday morning when I passed by on my way to work, it had gone up to 2.13. But, on my way home Friday, it went up yet again to 2.17. Even with the Prius, it's a bit scary.
On the other hand, it might be a blessing in disguise. One of the guys at the airport was complaining that it cost him 55 bucks to fill up. I asked him what he was driving and he replied that he drove a Tahoe. Duh? Another instructor pointed at me and told the guy, "Bob got a Prius just in time". The guy had never heard of one and was stupified to find out that I got better than 50 mpg everywhere. Maybe this is a start for what it will take to shake up the sotted, overfed, overindulged, unthinking glob of mainstream American consumerism.

2.27 in good old oregon.. One of the most gas taxed states. Glad i just got my prius.....Well my dad did. Im with a jeep nice car but 14mpg sucks compared to my dads 40 and not even broken in yet.

Last night, Shell station in Hollywood, FL 1.98. The rest of the stations I passed were at 2.00.

 

We hear all the time about how cheap our gas is comparted to Europe. This is a bit misleading since Europeans do get something for there taxes while we pay tax and are still stuck with roads, bridges in need of much repair. Oh well, the important thing is theat we are building nice roads in Iraq, Afgahnistan and the Balkans.

 

I'm now seeing some of the same stations in the 1.88 range for regular.

 

I just past the station that I get gas at and it is now $2.29 for regular. I am at my last square

At least I know that I dont have to get gas as often anymore.

Not necessarily! My '95 Odyssey holds about 17 gallons and I usually get 14-15 gallons when I fill up. It will be interesting to see the power boaters with the 100+ gallon tanks pulling up to the gas dock this year!

 

My VUE had a 15.5 gallon tank as well. By the time I'd get to filling it up, I'd be putting a similar quantity in, and it got nearly 30 mpg.

Wow! 30 MPG out of your Vue is pretty remarkable, Wolfman. What is the engine/transmission combo thta you have? I just traded in my '03 Vue with the 4 cyl/AWD/CVT. It was EPA rated at 21city/26Hwy. It generally averaged 22-23 which was a big part supporting of it's departure. BTW, I just filled the Prius up yesterday in Bethesda, MD Shell station for $2.039 per gallon.

 

Gas? I didn't know Prius needs gas!

 

I drove very carefully, using many of the same techniques that we do with the Prius, to get these numbers. My driving environment is primarily highway as well. I had the exact same combo you did. AWD, CVT, with the four banger.

 

That's pretty incredible! I too drove the Vue in a similar conservative manner as I do my Prius but never could improve on the mileage. Much of my 44 mile round trip commute was mixed highway sprinkled with stop and go highway topped off with stop and go city. :|

 

Here in the SF East Bay, local shell station has today's prices at $2.29/$2.47/$2.57. Highest I've seen outside the city.

I always go to the same Shell station because they have one of those drive-through car washes (as discussed in other threads) which is all I'll do besides wash it myself.

Frustrating thing is you don't get the $2.00 discount unless you pump 8 gallons, and I've NEVER squeezed in more than 7! Cost me $15.00 to fill it up from the first sign of the flashing last bar. I do that twice a month and commute 37 miles each way to work. No, I'm definitely not complaining!!!!
