DIY Speaker upgrade

They probably won't have exactly what you want but will come closer than most places. They should have an adapter kit that allows you to plug in some aftermarket speakers and adapters to attach the new speakers to your car, unfortunately usually with some trimming.

 

Not being very handy, I am going to have someone do the job for me.

 

This stereo is strugglin'. I'd be curious to see some additional aftermarket options.

 

In lieu of speaker recommendations, I may just take the Kappa Infinities & Kenwood sub I removed from my '05 (see sig block) after this happened and try 'em out in the V.

They were an order of magnitude better than the factories in the '05. Same problem with this one.

My sense is that there's enough power coming out of the head unit, but the speakers are typical Toyota "mush," especially the rears, as others have noted. And there's absolutely no midrange anywhere.

Would be most obliged, however, if someone can tell me how to get at those tweeters up there in the dash to replace 'em? (FYI, I have a non-ATP model 5 but I don't think that matters, does it?)

Anybody done this in the V or can you point me to instructions if they exist?

Can't find any here or elsewhere.

I am looking at replacing the front speakers with these
Kenwood Kfc-6993Ps 6X9 or Kenwood Kfc-1693Ps 6.5


and the rears with these
Kenwood Kfc-1393Ps 5&1/4


My problem is trying to figure out exactly what size speakers I need as the info on the internet is not that great. Also I want to pull off the door to get to the speaker but it does not seem straight forward. Does anyone have experience and/or instructions?

 

Yeah, Crutchfield has the adapters that will plug right into the factory speaker harness in the doors, and they also have the mounting adapters that will allow you to mount the speakers in the OEM speaker cutouts in the doors. When you purchase from them, they provide lots of information about installation. You can see online what fits and what doesn't along with any installation notes for your car.

 

When I checked crutch field it only shows 6.5s for the front but bestbuy and I forget the other site I saw showed 6x9s

 

Crutchfield doesn't seem to have the v's specs quite right. Unless I'm mistaken, looks like the front doors are 6x9, rear doors 6. Have no idea what would fit for tweeters in the dash.

And like Mbern1008, would be nice to know how to get those puppies out of there.

I replaced the fronts with 6x8s and the rears with 6 1/2. I decided to leave the dash speakers in place. I posted the detailed info in this thread:

OK, so we're fairly clear on at least the nominal speaker sizes (save for the tweeter) and I managed to find a PDF off one of the threads you provided (in french, of course, which I've translated and attached) that outlines how to get at the tweets on a Gen 3.

Looks like it might be a similar set up on the v, so I'll give it a try, though might try to rent the Toyota Tech Manual that has these same instructions, en englaise pour le "v", from Toyota owner's web site (ugh, just read ... Mac's not supported ... guess it's gonna be en francaise a la G3).

And I've most definitely taken to heart someone's very sage advice to disconnect the 12V before messing with the plastic that contains the curtain airbags.

I suspect everything else I need to remove (door panels and pillar plastic between the front/rear doors to run wire for the self-powered sub from one of the rear speakers) is pretty much the same drill as it was for my Gen 2.

Probably won't get to it this weekend, but will shoot for next. If anyone gets to it before me, would appreciate a sanity check.
