I was ome of the early adopters of Rhioi Ramps, having used them for over 10 years. On concrete, they slide all over the place, when you are trying to place your car up on them. Both of my Rhinos have cuts in them, after I ran over the low backstops and landed the "pinch weld" rocker ralis on them. They are a real hassle to remove. Recently, I tried a pair of Race Ramps that a fellow PriusIII owner had on my Prius v. They were wonderful. They stayed in place and did not slide, and they had backstops twice as high as the ones on the Rhinos. They looked like they were too light. They had a urethane and rubber "speckle" coating over the entire structual foam core. I checked them out on Amazon. They were expensive at $137 delivered. Having used them and found them to be wonderful, I boght a pair. I couldn'e be happier. Check them out on Amazon.com and read the glowing reviews; http://www.amazon.com/dp/product/B003ZA8WIE?tag=priuschatcom-20
They look nice, but it doesn't look like there's much of a 'landing area' on top. I use old style stamped steel ramps ... have two or three sets of them. Cost $19 a pair. They don't slide, have nice stamped grips on the ramp, and have a nice recessed landing area that cradles the tire. I love em. Don't know if you can still get them though. Oops .... guess you can .... a little more expensive now .... http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_200339033_200339033 REV
Like you, I thought the top of the ramps were kind of short, buy upon using them, the area is more than adequate since the tire only contacts the top in a small area. The nice thing is that they don't slide on dirt, grass or sand, either. The large "conforming" foam base means that the load is distributed over a good area and will not sink in. Recently, I found that the Rhino Ramps were better on the hard red clay surface, here, in the Upstate of South Carolina. But, all around, the Race Ramps are much superior. They araise the car enough for the oil filter and plug access door to come all the way down. And, I waiting for the free wheel chocks that I'm getting on the rebate. Another plus, unlike metal or hard plastic ramps, they will NOT ding your car, even if you're careless.
I am sold on the Race Ramps but wanted to ask a question before ordering. Will the 40" clear our low chin spoiler on the Prius v wagon? Or should I go with the 56" that are $66.00 more expensive but have a less steep angle? Thanks, Andy
I have no problems whatsoever using my pair of Rhino ramps. Been using them for many vehicles now. The Nissan Quest had by far the largest tires and most weight on them, and still never had a problem. Of course I was careful when moving onto them.
There must different models of Rhino Ramps because I have never had an issue with mine sliding either. Mine have a very nice grip on concrete.
Race ramps are great, I recently used them for a clutch job. I was using a different version than the OP, though:
For the Rhino ramps, just wedge them under the front tires before driving onto them. Once your tire moves, it is already exerting down force on the ramp so it absolutely cannot slide. Works even on very smooth concrete.
