Have about 25K miles to really worry about, but thought I would ask anyways.... In the past with other car manufactures I used the dealer for service during the warranty period. Mostly because of them willing to sign off on any TSB's that I made attention to when I brought the car in for service. Afterwards I took it to a local mechanic. Rethinking that perhaps. Only for added resell value at trade in time, in particular if I trade for another Toyota. So the question is, does having an "official Toyota service record" have any value at trade-in time?
There is nothing wrong with going to the dealer for routine mfr. recommended maintenance. But don't go in asking for a 'service' pkg they offer based on mileage. That's where you'll get ripped off. This car requires nothing more than oil changes and filter changes for the first 120,000 miles. Get the transmission fluid changed once or twice for good measure If you trade a car when's the last time any dealer asked for service records. And if you buy used from a dealer when's the last time they made previous onwners records a available to you. They could probably be sued. If a dealer hangs that over your head at trade in time , find another dealer.
Smart enough to know that service packages are a "value add" based on milage for ANY service center. Hoping as I try in the next 1000-1500 miles of another Toyota dealer in gaining a trust in how they treat me. Based on threads on here, I will spend the extra $ to have it done early.... It was many years ago that I was told by a dealer that I was trading in for the same manufacturer, that they saw that kept up on the maintenance - and that was the reason for a good trade value - which was higher than I thought it would be. I guess I should have asked if it makes any difference as a "certified used" car trade. I mean they ding us for accidents, should we not be rewarded for "stellar" service?
You can do your own service and post it on Toyota's Owner's website, so you and the dealer can keep track of your car.
When I was going to trade in Pearl the fact that she -never- got service at the dealer (I did it all myself and recorded it in the book) had no impact on value at the dealer. All they cared about was that it was done, and I was able to provide at least -some- proof (I kept the oil purchase receipts and the filter purchase receipts). Pearl did get the mechanical water pump replaced under warranty at the dealer and the inverter cooling system pump on recall at the dealer. But those were the only times the dealer saw the car. Sorry, but I don't think an oil change that takes 10 min. is worth close to $200! That's why they call them "stealerships". A friend bought Pearl, and soon we're going to do an oil change (he gets the first one free). Then we're going to take the car to a dealer to get the coolant changed in both systems and the HSD oil changed as well. I felt it was only fair I paid for those as the car was due for them when sold.
When I was selling car's it was barely ever a factor to ask someone about service history on a car. I was at two different dealerships and simply it just didn't matter. Biggest things were if there were hits on carfax about cars being in accidents and floods...
Unfortunately you can't do that in Canada. Things I can think of, if you get your routine mainenance done through the dealership: you're more likely to have a broken flap on that plastic shield under the engine. And a transaxle that's never had a fluid change. And door hinges slathered with lube, lol.
dealers lowball trade ins. they won't even give you book value. the reason they don't care how or when it was serviced is because they send everything but primo vehicles to auction. the ones they keep are low mile no accident. doesn't matter to the buyer if it was serviced, just, how does it look, run and will it last thru the used car warranty.
