DIY JDM style side mirrors combo lights (Signal+Parking+Courtesy lights)

For all V owners out there interested in this, I have my kit from Nigel, have paid my $15 for Toyota TIS access and am pouring through the specs now to confirm where everything connects on our cars. I have found and tested the turn signal, parking light connections in the drivers footwell and have identified a candidate for the courtesy light.

OWG please let all of us fellow Prius Chatters know where to hook up the courtesy light underneath the dash. I know the previous members on here were attempting to find it without have to hook it to the dome light. I quit reading after page 22 HAHA!

If you find the exact location underneath the dash could you please upload a picture of it. It is the last step I am looking for regarding the whole installation instructions in order to give them to my audio/ mobile electronics shop.

We all appreciate anything you provide!

 

sort of half off topic, but is there anything in there about the motorized folding mirror control module? should be eight wires, 2 going to the mirror adjustment switch and 6 to the car harness under the driver side kick panel.

DRIVING LIGHT
Ground anywhere, positive to blue wire behind panel with mirror adjustment switch, fuel door release switch, and dash brightness adjustment wheel

PUDDLE LIGHT
This is where most people are having a hard time. Open the driver side a-pillar and run it down the weather stripping. You have to be carefully because the dome light is reverse loaded. when the doors are open, one of the wires is grounded and the other one is supplying 12v to the dome. when the doors close, the ground wire charges up to 12v and the light turns off because the potential difference between two 12v wires becomes 0.

If you hook up + to + and - to -, you may find your courtesy lights actually turning off when your dome is on and on when your dome is off!

long story short, there is a run of three white wires running together from dome down the driver side a-pillar. Splice into it upstream of where it gets tucked into the big black bundle of wire. This is your only chance because the other end of the bundle is in the engine compartment. The two side wires are +, the middle wire is constant ground. There is also a blue wire in the colorful bundle nearby. This blue wire is usually 12v loaded to keep the dome lights off and becomes ground to allow current through the dome lights when doors are open. Splice the courtesy light ground (-) wire to this blue wire and your courtesy light power wire to one of the two (+) white wires.

I am fairly certain both (+) white wires are constantly loaded but if not it's a 50/50 chance whether you sync your courtesy lights to the door activated dome light or the manual reading light switch. I got it right on the first try and didn't bother trying the second one to see what happens.

This setup is better than going all the way to the dome light bulb itself because your courtesy lights will not come on when passengers manually turn on the dome light.

 

Sorry, no, the docs are North American only and nothing there re motor for folding mirrors on the Prius.

 

OK, install is all done, and everything is working as it should. Rather than flood more on this thread I am going to start a new one in the Prius V area and will add a link to it once I get everything in there. Here is a tease:

 

I currently have my mirrors installed but not wired. I plugged the red wire on the driver's side to the yellow wire that is shown in the tutorial. I then connected the black wire from the same bundle to the chassis ground. This isn't working. I am assuming that I should not connect the black wire to ground, but what should I connect it to?

Any help would be appreciated.

That black wire is a ground. Make sure whatever you're attaching that wire to is actually metal and not hard plastic (including the screw).

 

I'm very confused now. I was attaching it to the same grounding screw that I used for my fog lights, which is the grounding screw that the fog light instructions stated to use. I also used a multimeter to check to see if the yellow wire was tapped correctly, which is was. Perhaps I didn't get a good connection to the red wire... I really hope I didn't accidentally cut the wire somewhere. I used automotive loom but who knows, I just I'll take a 9V out there and hopefully figure it out.

Only other thing I can think of is to make sure your tap is actually tapping into that yellow wire.

 

Thank you very much sLick, it was tapped into the yellow wire, but it wasn't tapped fully into the red wire. I think the taps I bought are slightly too large. I just bent the wire onto itself and put that into the tap and it's working fine now.

In case anyone is wondering, in my opinion this is much more frustrating than the fog lights or engine block heater.... for a nice spin on that, if you installed these mirrors you can definitely do the ebh or fogs.

 

Pretty much everyone agrees it's an advanced modification.

Definitely agree. There were more than a few times on Saturday when I found myself saying "Why am I doing this?". But when the door panels are off and your mirrors are disected on the kitchen table there's no turning back!

installed mine over the weekend. took me about 3 hours to install it! but it's all worth it! love the puddle lights, pilot light and turn signal light!

 

Haha....u should Try the folding mirror mod at the same time.

 

and removing the defrosters from the factory mirrors and transferring them to the blue mirrors, and installing them with the running LEDs behind the glass... yikes

 

lol...one reason I've put it off for SO long! I think the folding mirror mod should be considered a "dont-try-this-at-home" modification!
