So my 2012 Prius 2 cames with two key fobs. I would like a third as a spare. I do not require a new mechanical laser cut key. I see that there are key fobs on eBay that match my part number, which ends in ACX. So, the task at hand is to find a dealer, locksmith or other mechanic who will program the car to accept comands from the keyfob. The mechanic at the local dealership said that used keyfobs can not be applied to a different car than the one they originally are registered to. He said they are "Like Penguins, Mated for Life." Is it true that a used keyfob can not be registered to a different car?
No, that is incorrect. You need to find someone with Techstream, a Mongoose cable, and a way of generating a seed value. If you do, all that is required is a Reset of the SKS ECU - sixteen minutes and about one more to add all three fobs. You must add the used fob first, then your OEMs. Make sure the used fob you buy matches the rear FCC ID numbers exactly. Safe trips, Dave
