Can I get buy with Redline D6 in my transmission?

    Hello All,
    Posted this link a little while back:

    where I was (mostly) warned not to use anything other than Toyota WS Transmission Fluid. The Redline D6 has been in there for a few thousand miles. Obviously if I had to do it all over again, I would put in Toyota's WS fluid. Life is going to be very hectic for the next 4 months (or ~5,000 miles). my question is, do you think I'll be "safe" with the Redline D6 in there for a total of less than 10,000 miles?

    I called Redline and spoke with one of their technical guys who (of course) said that D6 is perfectly fine for the 2010 Prius, and is a directly Toyota WS substitute.

    No one is a genie, but in your opinion, am I OK with Redline for now? (2010 Gen III).

    You're probably OK .... but I have to ask .... why did you do that ?? It specs Toyota WS ... why not just use it ?

    I might ask Redline to put that in writing and keep it with your records. A failure of any of those components is going to be damn expensive. Ooops ... I see it says it's compatible on the can ... so what are you worried about ? If anything happens ... it looks like you may be able to go after Redline ... because Toyota's sure not gonna do a thing to help you. For as long as it takes to drain and refill ... I'd get it out of there and get the WS back in if you have any intentions of keeping the car and preserving your warranty.

    Sure, that is a fair question. I was also doing a ton of work on my 1997 Mercedes E420, and was ordering parts from autohausaz.com (for the prius: air filter, cabin filter, other small items) and I knew I wanted to change the tranny fluid and they listed it as a direct replacement (stupid, I know). So between the two cars, I ordered ~$1k worth of parts (most of the cost was on the MB side) and I was just trying to make my life easier....
    I made a mistake.

    It really doesn't take too long to change it out ... does it ?? I'd just do it and have peace of mind, and certainty that your warranty is intact, which it may be anyway if Toyota accepts the whole 'compatible' claim.

    He is going to be OK. I would change it in the next 15000-30000 miles though. There is nothing special about WS ATF: group 3 oil based hydraulic fluid with light additives pack. D6 is group 5 based with slightly higher additives, but still non-corrosive to copper as indicated by GL4.

    I guess for peace of mind, one can ask redline results of their ATF copper corrosion test (ASTM D-130).
