60 mpg with my V

    Not a tank average. Just a single trip.

    My commute to work is 33 miles each way. 30 of it is all freeway. Today I hit 60 mpg in light (I-5 light) traffic.

    Not bad for a V. My last two calculated tank averages were 52 mpg.

    Thats awesome. Can you post some details..driving style, how soon do you hit the freeway, was this right after a fill up and reset of the AVG B mileage etc. Best I have been able to achieve is 45 on the freeway and ~ 40 in the city.Thanks

    I usually reset both trip computers after a fill up and use trip A for keeping track of the whole tank and B for individual trips to and from work. So, in this case, trip B was my return home from work.

    As far as my trip to/from work, it is 33.5 (ish) miles each way to work (67 miles total). Thirty is all highway with slight hills (elev changes as much as +/- 300-400 feet) along the route. It takes me 1.5 miles to the highway and travel about 1.5 (ish) once off to my destination. I try to drive the speed limit (60 mph) or slightly less 57-58. I also try to use take advantage of EV conditions whenever possible (mostly the last mile or so on the way home). I do try to employ some hypermiling techniques whenever possible (ie. speed up on a downhill before the next uphill ect..) but nothing extreme.

    Over the last month or so with temperatures in the 60's here in the PNW, I usually manage an average of 52-54 indicated mpg on the way to work (net elevation gain) and 54-58 on the way home. The key is the cruise speed. The V gets the best mpg around 55 mpg and it decreases rapidly with higher speeds. At 65 mph, I see an averages of 50/52 mpg (to/from work), 60 mph 52/54 mpg (again to/from), and 57-58 mph 53/56. On the 60 mpg above, I took advantage of some folks that were driving around 55 mph and stuck with them as long as I could (not tailgaiting, just using them as an excuse to go slow) .

    If you can leave your ego behind (that was a slow evolution for me from driving more agressively) and leave earlier for work while driving in the right lane, you can consistently get over 50 mpg average with the V.

    Your right. I usually try to EV the last mile or so without hitting the magic 40% SOC. I have pushed it for too long a couple of times. Once I hit 40% SOC, ICE came on and wiped out my mpg gains.

    One last thought, commutes are all different so hills, prevaling highway speeds, and driving technique will make a huge difference on the mpg's you squeeze out of the car.

    Just giving you a hard time, Al. :)

    The Prius Liftback suffers similarly from higher speeds. 60mph and below produces amazing figures!

    60.1mpg for only 33.2 miles is almost meaningless; you need a full tank for 400-500 miles to get a useful mpg. I could reset my trip meter for the 12 miles downhill to the Cherokee Casino and show 100 mpg for that trip.
    I am achieving 46-48 mpg on hwy but less than 40 in city and this annoys me because I bought this thing for in city driving with a promise from Toyota of 44 mpg. Any comments?

    Same model.."v"-5...highway tends to be around 40/41 calculated....city around 44+ as high as 46....calculated
    This is in Cincinnati, known as the 7 hills (not very level)
    City mpg always is higher than expressway (65 mph)
    I'm very happy with these results...

    If you are getting less than 40 mpg in the city, it's probably because of your driving style.

    My overall displayed average is 45.6 combined. My last tank displayed 48.1 combined but it was 463 miles on 10.153 gallons, or 45.6 computed. I don't think that is bad combined at all, but I would love to see it up in the higher 40's if not 50.

    I have achieved lifetime of 50.1 (shown on the car), so I assume that means actual (per gas in the car) of around 48 to 48.5. I drive a mix of highway mileage vs. city driving. I'd say roughly half the miles are at highway speed, and the other half city street speeds. I rarely drive above 65, as I notice a considerable drop off in fuel economy. Ideally, I set the cruise for 3-5 miles below the posted limit and NEVER touch it. Cruise is THE way to go with the Prius V IMO. My husband, who has a second generation Prius and drives that exclusively by "feel" as he says, agrees that the Prius V is best driven in cruise mode whenever possible. I drive it that way even on city streets, and can tell you from experience that the lowest mph is 23 for cruise. Below that, it will not go into cruise mode. Anyway, I love the mileage I have been getting, and have zero complaints. I have 8000 miles (about) on the car.

    That is great mileage I am wondering if you put in Premium gas? The best I've ever had was around 51 mpg when my family drove out to the ocean and used cruise control. Lately I am getting around 46 around town. I put in regular unleaded.
    That is so great you are getting around 60mph.

    Are you SURE that was not an EPA estimate? Since the EPA started requiring their estimate to be printed larger than any other mileage claim, most manufacturers quit making any independent claims.
    I am betting your 'city driving' does not resemble the EPA's 'city driving'.

    And Premium fuel does not help any Prius so far, stick with Regular.
