    Welcome to the Prius world of getting great fuel economy pretty much no matter what you do.

    If you're out and about in the mountains a bunch 51 may be on the high end of what you can hope for in terms of fuel economy. If you're in the city more, then you can easily press for some more. Make sure your tires are pressed up properly, try to coast to lights (this is most easily done under 40 MPH by backing off the gas pedal until all the arrows disappear) and you'll find yourself pushing 60+ MPG in no time. Mileage on the vehicle shouldn't be a huge issue as I've seen tanks above 55 MPG in a friend's 2004 with over 210,000 miles on it and the car runs and drives like it was built yesterday. :)

    Once you get the basics down and learn how to glide you'll be in the mids 50s or better! They are pretty capable cars. :)

    Welcome to PriusChat and congrats on your early mpg results!

    Depending on how "heavy" the city traffic is for you on average, A/C use, tire pressure, as well as how much effort you put into maximizing your mpg results AND, granted, any number of variables you may-or-may-not have any control over, it's very possible you'll find it going WAY up from there. With the last fill-up, Mithril - also an '08 which we bought new - averaged 58.9 hand calculated, and so far on this tank his display is showing 59.8 after 177 miles.

    A word of "caution" however: hope you're already aware that mpg will suffer quite a lot during the colder driving season ... that's the MAIN reason Mithril's lifetime mpg has YET to reach 50, although it IS trending higher as time goes by!

    The area where you live makes a tremendous difference. Work is only 10 miles away and because the first 5 minutes is always low the average for us is 47-48. BUT we recently went to Sanibel island, a tourist trap on the west coast of FL. The drive from the bridge at the south end to the far north end must be 30 miles - the speeds are 30-35 and strictly enforced ... we were getting 75 MPG. It boosted our entire trip average to 52 by the time we got home.
