I apologize if this is an old topic, let me know where to find the thread if it already exists.

I was absolutely stunned to see one poster mention he traded his Lincoln Navigator for his Prius. I had assumed it was all old Civic's and similar that people were getting rid of. Now I'm really curious what people traded in, and especially if it was a larger, newer SUV that they grew tired of.

-Year, make, model, trans/ engine, 4WD/ 2WD, etc.

    If you feel like it:
-Did you buy a Prius when you weren't in the market for a car?
    -Is it an additional car?
    -Did you trade an SUV?
    -Is it your first car?
    -Is it your only car?
-What else do you drive/ ride?

    Here's me:

-No trade-in. Likely adding it to the fleet. My SUV will be for special occasions only. I may change my mind later.
-I am buying a Prius and have no need for a new car. I am buying one because I can. (Maybe I can... it hasn't arrived yet!)
-I've owned several cars as I used to be a mechanic for Toyota.
-I also own a 2000 Isuzu Trooper 4x4 Auto, and a 1994 Camry 4 Cyl Auto, and a 2004 Buell Firebolt manual (motorcycle).

My car is 11 years old, so no one would take that junk!

1993 HEEP Wrangler - Going to be sold. I hate this damn car.

1965 Ford Mustang - Gonna keep her. Yeah, it's a gas guzzler, but I'll be commuting with the Prius (when I get one) only.

    2001 Honda F4i - Need my speed.

I am in construction but am selling my 99 F150 that gets 15 MPG.
(I only carry paperwork and a laptop)

I did not need a new car.

I bought the car because it is hypocritical to proudly build green houses and burn 1800 gallons of gas a year.

I have an 84 el camino in the driveway for hauling things but so far have not needed to.(6 weeks)

I get mileage in the 50s and save 200$ a month in gas and probably 50$ a month in upcoming maintainance on the F150.

It has been 26 years since I owned a car. I love this car!

I traded a 2002 GTI 1.8T for the Prius. In late January I had a bad motorcycle accident and I still can't drive a stick-shift car. Since no one else in the family knew how to drive my car, and my wife refused to learn, I traded that otherwise nice car for a Prius.

I like the Prius a lot bit miss a couple of features from the VW, including the 8 mph auto-lock feature, the nice interior dash and door materials, the cloth seats, the easy to use system for keeping the floor mats in place, the four-wheel disk brakes, and the side plus curtain air bags.

after i get my prius (whenever that is) i will sell my 2002 buick rendezvous, (AWD crossover SUV). the buick is nice but i couldn't resist the techno-geek lure of the prius and the high mileage.

i will also be keeping my 1987 avanti (see my avatar) which gets better mileage than my buick but is mainly a fun weekend toy and collectible.

1995 Dodge Neon, first year model. :pukeleft: (it was not my choice, my ex wanted a cheap car with some power. It got more than the Honda Civic)

I started having problems with it since the beginning. Although I was able to drive it around 9 years. It was expensive to fix the last year though. I got $200 for them to take it off my hands :D

I traded a 2002 Buick Regal Auto/ 3.8 2WD fully loaded, got best 28.5 MPG. At 49000 the Transmission started heat related jerks, and hard shifting, well what do you expect, it is an American made Car...

    I feel like it:
-Did you buy a Prius when you weren't in the market for a car? Yes, I needed something that is more reliable, and I wanted to go back to my Toyota Branded Cars, I had a 1992 Camery for 7 Years put more then 178000 miles on it, with "NO" problems what so ever... Got $5000.00 for it... should have never sold it. Since then bought two lemon US made cars such as a Dodge "interible" and a Grand Prix with hard as a rock suspension, never again... trust me.
-Is it an additional car? nop
-Did you trade an SUV? don't buy these pathetic gas-guzzzzzlers any way.
-Is it your first car? nop, may be #. 20- 25 th, I have given up counting...
-Is it your only car? My wife owns a 2000 Impala currently has only 28k on it, so far no problems with it, -- knock on w o o d ---
-What else do you drive/ ride? that's it...

I have to admit, that my new 2004 Prius is my favorit toy over modeling "European Model Trains" (Märklin) Digital. I can not remember being as excited about a car as I am, and have been for this Techno wonder car. It amazes me, and gives new interesting things every day! :D

I sold my 1995 Honda Civic VX to my next door neighbor when I brought my Prius home. He's happy to be getting 38 mpg instead of the 12 mpg he was getting in his truck. I wasn't in the market for a new car when I first read about the 2004 Prius in April. As soon as I saw it I knew I had to get one. As I said to my wife that night, "That is the perfect car!"

The Prius is not an additional car. My wife has an Acura CL and I have my Prius It is pretty tough to live in Los Angeles without a car.

The Prius is not my first car. My first car was 1974 VW Beetle.
After that, I had a 1979 Mazda GLC, a 1989 Mazda pickup, 1995 Honda Civic, and now the Prius. I plan on keeping the Prius for a long time.

I traded in a '97 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo. Had it for 4 years, and pretty much hated the damn thing. It was only good for hauling my musical equipment and dogs around. Everything just seemed to fall apart, one thing after another.

As I was planning to move my family, and have a long commute, I wanted to trade it in for something more MPG friendly. I was looking at the Prius and the Scion xA. I "lucked" into the Prius when I went for a test drive of a dealer's personal car, and there just happened to be--fresh of the truck--a Millennium Silver AF just sitting there.

It was then just a matter of working out the financing :D

Right now, we have the Prius (my commuter car), a '97 Toyota Avalon (the family car), and a '00 Mercedes SLK 230 (the FUN car).

I'm guessing that would be me. :)

    Rationale?:

    1) Sub-12mpg.
    2) Rapidly declining resale value.
    3) Extra seating rarely used.
    4) Got tired of having to climb in.
    5) Other miscellanea I've already forgotten. :D

    What I gained:

    1) Side curtain airbags.
    2) VSC.
    3) HID headlamps.
    4) Navigation system.
    5) Smart Start & Entry
    6) Vehicle that is 3 MYs newer.
    7) Ease of entry.
    8) Better maneuverability. (okay, this should be #8 but it's "cool" anyway)
    9) At least 30 mpg.
    10) Lower insurance rate.
    11) Improved overall driving attitude.
    12) Lower "kill rate".

    What I gave up:

    1) 7-passenger seating (rarely used).
    2) Sunroof (almost never used).
    3) Leather seats (don't really care).
    4) AWD (nice but offset by higher CG and I don't go offroad).
    5) More overall cargo space with the third-row seat folded (minor issue).
    6) Power seats (set it when I bought it and that was the end of that).
    7) Higher "kill rate" (useful only in places like Fallujah).

Traded in a 1997 Subaru Legacy Outback (avg mgp 22 or so)

I bought it used, had it a year, was close to being in the market for a car. (I previously didn't have to commute, now I do a couple days a week).

Have one other car in the house - a 2000 dodge neon that's my husband's. Although it has only been driven 3 times in the 3 weeks we've had the prius!

I traded in a 2000 Ford Mustang with 53,000 miles on it.

-Did you buy a Prius when you weren't in the market for a car? Kinda. I really liked all the features the Prius had and decided I had to have one.

-Is it an additional car? Nope, my wife and I both have one car each.

-Did you trade an SUV? No.

-Is it your first car? No, it's my fourth.

-Is it your only car? See Question #2.

-What else do you drive/ ride? My wife has a Scion xA which I occasionally ride in.

No trade-in. We have a 2000 Toyota Tundra and at current gas prices the milage is killing us. We are retired and still need the Tundra to pull our Scamp 5th Wheel Fiberglass travel trailer www.scamptrailers.com/. We plan on only using the truck to pull the trailer when we go camping and do all of our other driving with the Prius.
I am also an early adopter, techno-nerd, Greenspeed riding, Mac user so the Prius appeales to me on many levels. :D

Gave my wife the 2002 Saturn Wagon, which I just loved. SHe gets about 22-27 mpg. But I'm currently getting 50-53 mpg's. I agree with what someone else said, I have not been this excited about a car EVER.

Oh yeah, I also have a 1975 MGB sitting in the driveway.

When I finally get my Prius (ordered one in April), I'll continue to hold on to my `93 Grand Caravan. The 'daddy mobile' has 204+K miles on it and still get 21 MPG city/hwy miles. You can't beat it for vacations where we take four people, the luggage and a cadre of musical instruments.

My kids (12 & 14) thought I was joking when I said I wasn't going to by a new minivan and actually tried to talk me out of the Prius. But now that they've seen a few on the road, they're warming to the idea. Although the 14 year old said the other day that "it'll be creepy riding in the Prius." When asked why, she said "Well suppose the computer stops running and you can't brake or steer!" I then explained the redundant systems and fail safes and stuff. "It'll still be creepy," she said. Sigh.

I traded a '99 Acura 3.2 TL with 63,000 miles on it. Averaged around 21 MPG.

I liked theTL (when the tranny wasn't acting up), but I don't miss it a bit.
It had a Bose six speaker sound system but didn't sound as clear as the Prius.

I wasn't planning on a new car until Aug '04, but I put my name on a list in October and got lucky in March.

My new Tideland shares space in my garage with my wife's '02 Camry V6.
The plan is to trade that in on an '06 Camry Hybrid.

Hmmm, maybe we should get on a waiting list now.
