Auxilliary Battery Life: Please POST if you have replaced yours

(And I quite agree that 96 posts do not seem to represent a "newbie." I've been on PriusChat on and off for 6 years, but I only have 139 posts.)

My 2005 has been sitting around on the street undriven for 2-3 weeks. I'm trying to sell it (since it's my "extra" Prius). Tried to start it this morning and nothing would respond: no SKS, no remote unlock, no start.

I'm quite sure I need to replace the 12V, and I'll use the info in this thread to buy a battery this week.

I'll jump-start it to get it in for its 90K service, and I'll replace the battery, and then I'll hope to sell it to pay off the note on my 2010 GenIII.

Parked my 2009 eighteen month old Prius T-Spirit at Heathrow, went away for two weeks, came back and the whole lot was dead, could not use the remote to get in the car, so opened up with the key, phoned the AA and sat and waited.
They started it, stating that the rear battery was totally dead, took it to my local dealer who replaced it, obviously under warranty, adding that there were two dead cells in the battery, and that they had a lot of them failing recently on new'ish cars.
Great advert for Toyota....."NOT".

 

Yesterday I jumped in the car to make a quick trip to the grocery store and it was dead. No dome light, no displays, nada.
After a decent amount of research and learning some interesting things about this car. I thought I'd share that my factory battery definitely "beat the odds". Now, I'm on to find a replacement, as I've been trickle charging the aux. battery for about 4.5hrs and have minimal charge level improvement. I'll let ya'll know what I replaced with -- it dang sure won't be from the dealer....$212 battery & $50 adapter tray (plus labor, since they won't just sell me the parts! lol)

 

just replaced my 04 yesterday, no complaints whatsoever.

 

Do you mean the aux battery or the entire Prius?

As far as I know I had the original 12V battery in my 2007, but I bought it just a few months ago so no way to be truly sure. It was reading as low as 9.9 volts per the ScanGauge and I believe it was costing me 5+ MPG as well. Replaced it a couple days ago with an Optima YellowTop from Advance Auto Parts (there's a thread in the main forum where you can get one for $150 shipped). Runs like a champ now and I was averaging 67 MPG before I started blasting the aircon

 

My 2005 ( in service Oct 2004) still has the original Aux. battery. I just had it tested, including a stress test and it passed with flying colors.

 

Replaced mine with a yellowtop after three years. I could probably have got another tear or two out of the factory battery, but maybe not. Given that roughly half the failures of ANYTHING I see here are are failures of the 12v battery, I consider it a very inexpensive investment in peace of mind.

 

I had mine replaced today. 2006 Prius 3 with about 80,000 miles. $297 for dealer to do it.

 

We have an '06 and replaced the 12v last year in it's 5th year at about 100,000 miles. After checking on line and with the dealer, I bought one from Heintz Toyota in Mankato, Minn. for $138 in a box, a huge box - that could have been dropped out of a plane with out damage. I used a starter battery hooked up under the hood to save all of the settings and replaced the old one with out a glitch. It was easy.

Returned the old one to the dealer. Had no symtoms, but from what I had read here, did not want to have any. I had checked the voltage with the old one using the MFD screens and it was still OK.

 

Replaced mine after 3 years. Had run the old one dead several times at car shows running custom stereo and lights. Got to where it would only hold a charge for a couple days. Replaced with an Optima.

I purchased my Prius on October 31, 2011.While going through the car checking everything in the days after purchase I found battery voltage to be 10.5vdc with no load. Prius worked great no apparent problems..I immediately ordered an Optima yellow top battery and within a week had replaced the battery. original battery had a date 12/19/2004 on it, so basically it lasted 6 years and 11 months.

I replaced the battery although it was still ok, and now on my ride on mower.
Replacement battery 60 amp/hr at 20hr rate Haze AGM
I cannot believe how few batteries are available in the US for the Prius compared to the uk but checking on your Ebay site I did find one very good contender that I have not seen mentioned on PC.


Check out Vmax MB96-1300 should fit the Prius perfectly.

This battery has almost double the capacity of the Optima.

Or mb857-35 same capacity as the Optima
