Are they available in stores? The cat seems particularly happy.

To search for peer-reviewed studies, patents etc. use Google Scholar at scholar.google.com It is much more targeted than normal search engines.
I listen to "The Science Show" and "Dr Karl" podcasts on ABC Radio (Australia). You should be able to find stories about power lines and cancer clusters in the back catalogue.

A friend of mine has HV power lines running through his property. He has strapped a few florescent tubes to the fence next to his access road to help see the track at night - no connections on the tubes, and they give off a faint light - just enough to see where the track goes.

He and his family have been living there for the last 15 years without any medical issues.

Whatever the varying levels of EMF's are doing long term to our DNA is not set in concrete (nor is short term stuff). That's why folks are often polarized one view or the other. One person's experience doesn't make a proof ... nor do a lot of folks with the same set of experiences.

That said, we have a BEAUTIFUL community just down the road . . 3/4 million and up . . horse properties . . . . huge parcels . . . view homes - overlooking much of the saddleback valley . . . and yet one side of the community has THIS to deal with ... being as close as you can legally build to high voltage. Because of the power lines, this one side of the community sells 'cheep' ... about 10% less. Seems people either don't like looking at wires ... or they feel 'uncomfortable' with it. Would YOU want to live that close to EMF's? Not me. We have friends that actually live here and the husband has HUGE debilitating medical issues. Is it the result of being right near 50K high voltage power lines? He'd say, 'no-way'. First thing I'd do is move ... just in case. In fact, I wouldn't live that close, even if you gave me the home. Call me superstitious.

That 10% discount on a house is more than enough to pay for some good shielding.

If there was an awesome home that you really liked and was selling at a discount because the last owner was murdered randomly in the home, would that affect your decision to buy that home? Should it? If it did, should you be faulted and labeled a nutcase for it?

I figured someone would find it ironic. It did lead to an early fascination with electric and power.

But the issues with price of properties is very real. Even if there are no issues, many people think there is so that is enough. In real-estate perception is often the reality that matters. Now if there was a way to make an inductive charging unit powered by the lines, there might be some added market value ;-) (Actually its ilegal to use them for inductive power.. at least within their right of way which is the only place you might find enough power to do much).
