Had a person take a picture on the highway 8 minutes after I got them, and had another person "honk and thumbs up" at a red light yesterday. (Seriously, don't honk at red lights. Someone might think they are missing a green and go out into oncoming traffic). Oh, and I am a nerd who designs MMOs for a living.

That’s awesome! I have been wanting to get my own plates, but not sure how to? Do I just walk into DMV and fill out paperwork? What is the fee and what did you do with the plates the dealer ordered for you when you bought the car?
It's pretty simple in California. You can use the website (dmv.ca.gov I think) to check availability and order and pay on the website. About 8 to 12 weeks later you will get a postcard from the DMV telling you your plates are in (at the office you specified when ordering them). You should then make an appointment to get your plates. You need to bring your old plates and your current registration for the car (most people take these off in the parking lot when they get there). You will get a new registration and they will confiscate your old plates when you get the new ones. I don't know how other states work, sorry.
