My wife is away and arrives home tomorrow. She will have a beautiful 06' Prius for X-mas this year!! We were waiting for XB Scion for 2 months. I called our dealer 2 weeks ago and he 'thought' the XB was in Oregon and 'could' be here in January ... maybe LOL. this is after a promiss 6-8 weeks for delivery. So 2 days ago, I was flip with him saying it's worse than getting a Prius. And he said matter of fact I could sell you either 2 prius's on our lot. So after 10 mins I called back and said okay. I told my wife we will be waiting for scion for awhile and to be patient over the phone so this will be a great christmas and surprise at the airport on x-mas eve. I picked the 06' P last night and drove 200 mile home getting 50 mpg and very pleasant drive. I know of the credit forfit, but this is life and xmas. Cheers to all and merry pri-mus Charlie C
wow, what an awesome present! (says the prius owner, ha) i hope she's really excited- sounds like you already are! well, welcome to prius chat.. you've got a lot of reading to do
jeezalu ! dont get me wrong, I adore the missus, but Id never give my wife my dream car - and never a present worth $47,000 AUD.... you must be very rich or very crazy mister....or both
Charlie, I am doing the same thing as you... except for my daughter. We drove her new car to the coast today (where we will be celebrating Xmas)... and she will be surprised on Christmas morning with a driftwood pkg 8 Prius with a big red bow on top. I decided to get a 2nd one for myself. Mine should be here in early - mid January (they say 1/9). Mine is a silver pkg 8... but mine will not have the big red bow I think the tax credit is a "one time credit"... so I will take the credit on mine... but not on the one I bought my daughter. She is a student, and doesn't have any tax liability... so a credit wouldn't do her any good. I was prepared to just wrap up a "Prius brochure"... but when this car was available on the lot... I decided to take it and increase the Christmas morning drama. /Jim
You could take the credit for each of the cars if you had waited a week. but, then it wouldn't be Christmas without giving Uncle Sam $3200 to keep things running smoothly... Merry Christmas Dubya, congress and IRS!!
Yes went I offered the car as a option to the XB (2 long months waiting) my main consideration was needing a car and it was much nicer than the scion XB .... so okay 2K$ deduction compared to 3K$ credit, but I will get her old car and she will have a great tanglable x-ams gift. I drove it a little this morning before this evening's suprise ... what a stroke brillence by Toyota. Happy holidays CC
Welcome to PriusChat!!! One suggestion... have your wife read the Knowledge Base articles on this forum (don't forget the link to the old site). Dr. Fusco's article on why people don't get 60MPG is a must-read! Please let us know her reaction to her new gift. And Merry Pri-mas to you, too!!
Here in the states they are MUCH cheaper... I was blown away when I was in Aus recently and saw what they are chargin' (no pun intended) Here they are about $22-26k +fees, so about $25-29k Still an expensive present, but yes, an amazing one! Wanna adopt me? LOL
I had no idea that I could take the credit twice. I had previously talked to a tax accountant (IRS auditor) friend of mine, and he said the credit was a single time lifetime credit. I was under the impression that I could only take the credit once. /Jim
indeed... theres a number of reasons for that: less supply...less demand...tax structure...exchange rate. Just until quite recently, the prii were usually just used as govt agency vehicles. Mine used to belong to the EPA. Only relatively recently have moe private buyers been snapping them up. They just arent promoted here at all. Its definitely not how it is in the US...but I can see it getting that way in the next 5 years as petrol prices go up dramatically... right now, the general motoring public is going through the SUV phase, like 10 yrs ago in the US I wont start ranting on soccer moms and their SUVS tho, its a sore topic with me also - anyone who buys a brand new prius is damned silly doen here... one year later they drop down to much more reasonable prices. I got my 2004 a few months ago for 33k(includes costs)....thats a big jump from 46k
I think you all are forgetting that 47,000 AUD is roughly 34,000 USD (Yahoo). So the difference isn't that big. On other converters it even about 30,000 USD
the credit is per vehicle. there's a lot of misinformation about this one... wikipedia has a very good summary of the whole situation. check it out.
Thanks for the information... I was definately misinformed. However... since one of the new Prii is my daughter's car (she is over 21)... I do not believe that I could claim a tax credit for hers anyway. Because of her AMT situation, she would be ineligable for the credit. The only way that I can see us getting credits on both cars is if I bought and "kept" both of them under my own name... or if I had one and my wife had the other. We really do not want the liability of putting our assets, or insurance at risk based on the actions of our adult children. /Jim
