SoCal Dealers that would disable the seatbelt warning sound?

    Hi all,

I read in many threads (and also the owner's manual) that you can get a Toyota dealer to disable the seatbelt warning beep. The dealer that I bought my Prius from said that they cannot do it because (1)their technician doesn't know how to do it, and (2)the two service advisers whom I spoke with said that someone had asked for it previously and it might be against the law so they wouldn't do it.

Any of you in SoCal (near Los Angeles) had any luck asking your Toyota dealer to do it? Can you let me know which dealer wouldn't mind doing this?

[Before some of you gonna say that it can be easily fixed by just wearing the seatbelt, which I do pretty much all the time... But I'm in the habit of taking it off early as soon as I pull in front of my apartment/community gate. (You know, when you park in front of the gate, click your remote and wait for it to slowly opens...) ...Plus Toyota even left it to be customizable in its own manual, so I want to take advantage of that if I can.]

AFAIK, you cannot disable the driver's safety belt beep, for fairly obvious legal and safety reasons. It only lasts for 15 or 20 seconds above 15 mph, so deal with it, drive slower, or wear your seatbelt.

You can turn off the passenger seatbelt beep and the backup beep.

You can turn it off. But my dealer wouldn't do it either. She said it was absolutely against Toyota policy or something to that effect.

There are some dealers who will do it, some for free, some may charge. But I just wanted to add that you can also do it yourself, either with:

    1. A Scan Gauge II
    2. An Android device + OBD2 Bluetooth module + Torque app
    3. OBD2 cable and a laptop

There are many threads here about each method.

You can turn it off with a Scangauge. I think it changes it to three beeps. I'm in Loma Linda and could do it for you if you are ever in my area.

Once your terminal is connected to the ELM327 device, enter the commands shown below:
    AT H1 (Headers on)
    AT L1 (Line feeds on)
AT SP 6 (Set protocol to CAN 11bit/500kbps)
AT DP (show you current protocol)
    AT CAF1 (enable auto formatting)
AT SH 7C0 (this tells the ELM you are wanting to talk to ECU 7C0, which is the combination meter.)

    Get a scangauge.

Getting a list of SoCal dealers willing to do it (if you can even get it) is pointless because even if a dealer caves in to a particular customer's demand, the management will put a stop to it due to legal reasons before the practice becomes widespread. It's not like generating a list of dealers willing to modify the Prius personalized settings free of charge.

I had it done by the dealer and they also disabled the rear back up beeping. I made it part of the sale terms.

I also had it done, for free.

I only took the car in for them to disable the reverse and seat belt beep, nothing else. When I was talking with the service adviser, I told him what I wanted and he immediately said that the seat belt beep couldn't be disabled, but the reverse beep could. So, I said that it was on the manual as a feature, and told him that it said that the dealer had to do it, I couldn't do it myself (through the settings on the screen). He said he would try to have it done and let me know. A few hours later he calls to tell me that the car is ready and that both beeps were disabled!

Oh, BTW, I had the page of the manual where it says that it can be done by the dealer on my iPhone and showed him. But, I don't think this was necessary in order for them to get it done.

I'm not in southern California, I'm in the Central Valley. Went to the Clovis Toyota dealer, just an FYI..

I'd be surprised if any dealer would turn the driver's seatbelt warning off. The potential liability for the dealership and manufacturer is just too great. I can not speak for the 2010 Prius but my 2008 Lexus IS250's driver's seatbelt beep can be turned off by a series of key turns, button presses and brake pedal presses, posted widely on the web (no scangauge needed for this car).

    Thank you guys, :)

Just to give you all an update and for future reference for those who are doing a search and found this thread. I ended up doing it myself by buying a OBD2 cable for $15.27. :mod:

I was frustrated with my local Toyota dealer who said it would take 3-4 hours (because they were so busy that day) just for doing the reverse beep. I did what rickelchilango mentioned--showing them the page on the manual where it says that Toyota dealers should be able to customize both seatbelt and reverse beeps for me--but they still said they wouldn't do the seatbelt beep. I decided not to waste the whole afternoon waiting and came straight home.

    I bought myself a OBD2 cable from Amazon ($15.27)
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0073D43YG/
[bad 1 reviewer, but I figured it looks the same as all the cables people had been posting links here on eBay but I get free 2-day shipping from Amazon Prime. Probably they are all made by the same place in China anyway.]

The cable works perfectly and I was able to set it up with a laptop running Windows XP. (Plugged in the cable, let Windows XP do driver install from the included CD, and it shows up as my laptop COM4 port.)

I installed Microsoft .Net v.4 and gave JerryLoz's program a try but it wouldn't connect, you might have a better luck:
    http://priuschat.com/forums/gen-iii...elp-disabling-reverse-beep-5.html#post1273108

Because JerryLoz's program didn't work, I moved on to using PUTTY as described here by Ron:
    http://priuschat.com/forums/gen-iii...elp-disabling-reverse-beep-5.html#post1357175
Make sure that PUTTY uses serial connection:
    http://priuschat.com/forums/gen-iii...elp-disabling-reverse-beep-7.html#post1504313
At first PUTTY wouldn't connect, so I move the connection to COM3 port:
    http://priuschat.com/forums/gen-iii...elp-disabling-reverse-beep-6.html#post1459033
and try connect with PUTTY again, and voila I get the empty command screen.
I followed all the commands Ron has listed and made sure to take out an extra "0" from a command (see the above link).

And now my reverse only sound one beep.

The seatbelt beep is completely gone with no beep at all.

Just wanted to post the steps of what I went through in case there are others who's considering doing the same. The instructions are available here on PriusChat but are scattered in a few threads and long list of comment posts. I hope the direct links here will help point someone in the right direction if they too want to lessen all the beeping sounds inside their cars.

At the start I was clueless about all the terminal codes and OBD2 cable, but if I could do it then you can too!! It's not as hard or as complicated as it seems.
