this also happened to me in the midst of the trying-desperately-to-restart melee last night. it happened to happen when i was on the phone with the dealer and he said "that means that the battery is so dead that it won't release the key" which proved to be BS because ever since the battery had died i had been taking it and out... but at some point it just held onto it for like 5 minutes, and then eventually i could take it out again... weird.

Think hard, LC. In what direction was the car facing when you had the problem? When was it moved and in what direction was it parked? I'm speculating that the solar winds, in combination with the rising sun and setting moon, worked together to allign the mystic forces of St Jude - the patron saint of travelers - and recharged the battery.

Currently it's just a theory. I'll work on the math during my lunch break.

Sorry, I don't think it is a good idea to charge the Aux battery with a powerful 12V chargers. Instead, it should be pulse charged with a Prius Automatic Charger (P/N 00002–YA122–01) at a rate of no more than 3.5A or damage will occur.

Sorry for above. I now just leave my gel battery in the front cigar lighter and it stays fully charged at all times. When car is totally powered down, gel bat. is automatically disconnected, so no voltage drops occur. Have not checked it if left in acces. mode however.

I read this thread with some interest. Does anyone know it the battery is a "standard" battery that provides "cold cranking amps" or a Deep Cycle battery. Since all the Prius needs is a constant 12 at low amps and not the high amps that a starter on a conventional ICE starter needs would not a Deep Cycle battery be a better choice?

As a emergency power-up solver (jumper bat) or a complete replacement battery?

Mis-read your question, good question and I agree. If one could find a deep cycle with the same physical demensions I think it would work fine. 25-30 Amperes seems to be the recommended criteria. Your right cranking amps are unimportant.

Interesting (and scary, frankly) tale of "Prius-magic".

While reading the events that led up to "The Curious Incident of the Prius in the Parking Lot" ("...but Holmes, the Prius did nothing in the parking lot!" "That, my dear Watson, is the curious incident.") I was sure I was reminded of a similar post by someone who had also leaned in through a window to press the POWER button. Couldn't find that post.

Does that sound familiar to anyone else? Because two posters have done this, I've got to assume it's a case of being in ACC mode, or IG-ON mode or somthing rather than just leaving lights on (which should be fine if powered down correctly).

As for the holding/releaseing the fob...???

Don't rely on the headlights-off-at-drivers-door-open feature. That is not an autolamp functionality, it is a protection device which keeps the headlights from draining the battery should you forget to turn them off.

I always manually turn them off when I stop the vehicle. I feel much better about it when I'm the one shutting off the lights and not the car.

Like others, I have this feeling that you were in IG-ON all day and ran the 12v battery down. Always be aware of what mode the vehicle is in by knowing what the displays and lights should look like in each mode.

As stated in an earlier post, the headlights turn off only if you power off, then open the door. If you power back up then down, the lights might stay on.

You don't have to put the jumper on the screw. There's a metal tab above the screw (towards the firewall) that you can clamp onto.

    3. NOTICE FOR HYBRID SYSTEM ACTIVATION
    * When the warning lamp is illuminated or the battery has been disconnected and reconnected,
pressing the power switch may not start the system on the first attempt. If so, press the power
    switch again.
    * With the power switch’s power mode changed to ON (IG), disconnect the battery. If the key is not in the key slot during reconnection, DTC B2799 may be output.

Can I ask you a question, DanMan? How do you know so much about the Prius. It seems you are THE MAN to Ask!
I really mean this as a compliment. If have any questions, I do look for your replies.
    Thanks,

As with many things, it's not always what you know but rather who you know.
And when it comes to the Prius, I'm glad I know Dan. B)

First, I have a good understanding of cars and how they work. I probably have my dad to mostly thank for that, as he was an automechanic. Books on how things worked were the other source of information. Second, I have been playing with electronics all my life. My current position is providing technical support for networking, networking OSs, and email server applications.

Second, I researched on the car, since I had the same misconceptions many newbies had. After finding this site and PriusOnline, I learned about Grahm's site and learned how the car really worked. Since just about everything in this car is electric, I incorrectly assumed the car had no belts at all, as I didn't think there was anything left to power by belt. I bit the bullet and spent time downloading the techical manuals from Techinfo, reading some things here and there as I downloaded. When a question came up, I used Adobe Reader's search to find the answer, and would learn more. As I was reading, I was dismayed to find out there was a belt to run a mechanical water pump for the ICE coolant when it was running.

It's funny, though I can often figure things out you guys throw at me, I get fustrated and lose patience on thinking puzzles and adventure games. Myst III: Exile however has got me hooked, though I needed a few hints from the forum on the publisher's website.
