I have a 2010 Prius and a 2012 Prius, both have the stock 15" rims/tires except the 2012 has the black rims. I want to put the black rims on the 2010 and put the silver rims on the 2012 and the tires would stay on the rims, but the dealer says they have to reprogram the tire pressure monitoring system and that takes time and they said just to swap the rims/tires would cost $250 in labor. Are they serious? I thought it would just be a 15 minute job to swap the rims?
It takes about 15 minutes to update the TPMS when I do it using TechStream on my laptop. It shouldn't take the dealer much more than an hour between the tire swaps and the TPMS updates. Their price of $250 seems way out of line. I would expect that to result in 3 hours of labor, which is asinine for that task.
I've seen people say their dealer quoted them $75 to program a new set of TPMS sensors, so in your case that would be $150 just for that. Switching the tires shouldn't cost $100, but who knows. You can by a tool that will allow you to reprogram your TPMS IDs on your own, ATEQ quickset , it would cost less to buy that and do the wheel swap yourself.
