I just put new wheels on my 09' Prius. I have snow treads on the old wheels. I thought I would buy an ATEQ TPMS Quickset Tool to program the TPMS each time I switch wheels. But, I have already mounted tires on both sets of wheels. Do I have to take the tires of the rims to read the serial numbers from the TPMS sensors? Can the numbers be read remotely or do I pay the tire shop to remove the tires and read the numbers?
You would either need a tool that can read them separately, or have the tire shop remove the tires from the set of wheels that isn't currently programmed into the car. The ATEQ tool downloads the set of IDs from the ECU initially, but you'll need to know the IDs off the other set. I keep my IDs in a text file on my computer so that I know which ones needs to get programmed in each time.
I'm a bit of a newbie at tires. Why do you need to reprogram the TPMS as opposed to just resetting the monitor with the push button? What advantage is there to doing a reprogram when switching tires?
The Toyota TPMS ECU can only remember 4 sensor IDs, so when you change tires you have to delete the 4 it had been monitoring and replace them with the 4 for the new tires/wheels. You can get sensors that you can set the ID manually, and then if you set them to the same IDs as your current wheels you don't have to do any programming.
