    Since Volt is too small inside to hold my 3-wheel recumbant and doesn't offer a bumper on back to hold my other 2 bikes, they wouldn't be able to take that trip...

    A reasonable Volt owner will rent a car for these kind of weekend / holidays trips.
    There are distinct 2 advantages for him to rent a car:
    1. he can make these trips without compromising things.
    2. These trips will not spoil his nice Voltstats he is reporting here.

    One of our family biking destinations is the lake just 9 miles from mom's house.

    So, renting isn't even the slightest bit realistic for a spontaneous weekend outing.

    And what would you rent that could hold so much cargo?

    Prius PHV will show 0 gallons saved but we all know it'll use less gas than a Volt on similar trip without opportunity for recharge.

    Toyota's standards are higher. They compare PHV to the regular model Prius.

    GM compares Volt's "gas saved" to a traditional 30 MPG vehicle.

    An obsessive volt owner might, a reasonable one would not.
    They would either have a bike rack/trailer hitch
    (e.g. I probably going to order Trailer Hitch for Volt, Now less than $150.)

    or, just ride bikes from home (which is what I do).

    I often chide other volt owners if they take their "other car" (more likely than renting), just to keep their stats. (Unless their other car gets better than 40mpg on the highway). But there are only a few that really do that. If others are not driving their volt its because they want to save it from ice/snow and use a awd instead.

    Oh and John.. the Volt does not display "gallons save" at all, so i don't know where you get the GM is comparing to a 30mpg car. They let the owner figure out their savings.

    That's a good point. So, Volt will actually tell the owner x gallons saved without recharging.

    As I've already said a few times.
    The Volt does NOT display any "Gallons Saved" information

    There is no "30mpg" model or anything else built into the car.

    Dave, I thought about suggesting the same thing but I was concerned if he ever touched a volt he would explode into flames like a vampire in the light of day. :D :D :D

    When the PiP displays 'gallons saved', what does it reference?

    My first tank said:
    EV =1097 miles
    HV = 516 miles
    Consumption = 192 mpg
    Gallons saved = 19.1 gallons

    I calculate: gallons used = (1097 + 516) / 192 = 8.4 gallons
    HV mpg = 516 / 8.4 gallons = 61.4 mpg

    Producing: Gallons Saved = EV miles / (gas mpg)
    = 1097 / 61.4 = 17.9 gallons
    (but this is NOT the 19.1 gallons that the car is telling me!)

    EDIT: I'm tired and am going to bed. Maybe the error in my arithmetic will be obvious to me tomorrow...

    Took a test drive in a Volt today, really sweet. After the Volt has proved itself in 10 years, I will buy one. The screen said I had 232MPG lifetime use! :cheer2:

    It's stated as "Estimated Gallons of Fuel Saved" on the Energy Efficiency report owners get.

    How come there isn't a resource available for Volt references after all this time?

    This is what the screen looks like in Prius PHV (for me this evening)...

    Hmm if it is in OnStar spam. I've ignored it, as I guess most people do. There were enough erros in their initial on-star efficiency stuff that I've just ignored all they do. Someone already posted some report here with silly numbers on it.

    What type of volt reference are you seeking?

    Your calculation is based on 61.4 MPG. If we base it on 50 MPG,

    1,097 electric miles / 50 MPG = 21.94 gallons saved.

    516 gas miles / 50 MPG = 10.32 gallons - 8.4 gallons used = 1.92 gallons saved.

    Total should be 23.86 gallons saved.

    Instead of ignoring it, why don't you and others provide them feed back so OnStar can provide meaningful information. Some of the basic information such as total kWh and gallons consumed.

    Provided feedback early last fall still waiting on things to be fixed.
    But since I track/compute it myself its also not much of an issue.
    I do like the volstats.net data, which is based on the onstar service, and I like the phone app, but the monthly reports.. too little info far to late to be useful. I recommended they not waste resources on it.

    One could also make reference to the pathetic car I was driving before my PiP arrived. It barely got over 30 mpg.

    I don't know if this thread is defunct, but I will add my 1st fill-up here. I will add it to the spreadsheet once I get to a computer that doesn't block google docs.

    Driving pattern is a 3 mile jaunt to drop off son at day-care, 13 miles to work, 8 mile round trip during lunch and then back to daycare and home (so ~40 miles a day). Back country roads for the whole batch, with stop and go traffic up to 50 MPH bursts. Stretches of semi-hilly sections (nothing huge, but a quick up and down) and parts that are more level. I.e. terrible for fuel efficiency. That said, I am extremely pleased with the mileage I am getting (last car I got 27 MPG with a manual 4D sedan). I also have not inflated my tires extra, rather they are at what the dealer left them at (I wanted to get a good baseline to start from). I also only charge once a day as my employer has effectively said "pound sand" when asking about getting a charger installed at work.

    Gas at pump (first click): 8.739 gallons
    ODO: 695 (trip computer says 691.2) miles
    CONS: 81
    Avg MPG: 22

    Charge (kWh): 55
    Gas (computer): 8 gallons
    Fuel saved: 4.6 gallons

    % EV: 29
    EV miles: 203
    % HV: 71
    HV miles: 487

    So my calculated CONS is 79.5 MPG
    Calculated EV mile/kWh: 3.69
    Calculated EV kWh/100 miles: 27.09

    HV calculated MPG: 55.73

    And if done correctly, MPGe 68.01

    [MPGe = 695 mi/ (8.739 gal + (55 kWh/ 33.7 kWh/gallon))]
