Dealer parts guy seemed baffled in US. Canadian dealer (since auto DRL's are the law in Canada) said he'd have to look at it to see exact wiring and it might require a "body computer" (what's that?). I'm thinking the solution is to find the wiring diagram for the Prius 3/4's Auto/On/Off lights, compare it to the Prius 3/3's wiring diagram and that would tell the story. Are those diagrams with part numbers available somewhere?
How did you start this topic without it suggesting this thread? http://priuschat.com/forums/gen-iii...ifications/64812-automatic-headlights-25.html I wish I can close duplicate threads.
The Automatic Headlights thread is a very long epic. It starts with someone installing an aftermarket auto headlight gadget, then someone discovers the built-in auto headlight feature not used on US vehicles. That said, I just finished the mod which required removing the top of the dashboard (2011 + owners may not have to do this). I've found that the coolest new feature is auto dashboard lighting adjustment with outside light levels.
That was a DIY that likely voids 99% of the Prius warranty. Not really interested in that. Comparing the two wiring diagrams and getting the dealer to do it is the idea.
It is a great thread. I did the mod myself. I do wish I could close this thread and the one that someone will start next week with the same topic.
Void the warranty? Are you saying if you make this mod and have other issues with the car it will not be covered? The truth is, if you make this mod and your lights no longer work it probably will not be covered under warranty. It does not affect warranty issues on the rest of the car. Many people have made the mod with out issues. In less than 1 week after I bought my Prius I removed the dash and the front seat to add a lot of new features. I now have 80,000 miles and never had a warranty claim.
Of course it voids the warranty. Any malfunction that could be remotely tied to the DIY modification. On a computer controlled vehicle like the Prius, it's risky business. You want to do it, that's fine. Many do not and wading through a 50 pg. DIY chat is pointless to this topic. So did you have an answer to the difference between the wiring diagrams of the Auto/On/Off of the Prius 3/4 and the Prius 3/3?
That's not possible thanks to the Moss-Magnuson Warranty Act. The only situation you might run into is if they can prove the mod directly causes failure of unrelated components, in which cause the warranty is voided only on those components but not the rest of the car.
I installed the auto lights mod on my RAV4 and backup sensor and more, and toyota dealership had no problems with that with the many warranty works the car required, including replaced transmission (controlled by electronics just like any other modern car).
if installing a plugin conversion kit doesn't void the warranty I highly doubt adding auto headlights will.
Exactly and a DIY on a computer controls of computer controlled car. "Your honor the untrained customer disconnected the (insert life saving function here) which had (insert cascade effect here)." Again for folks who want to do DIY, go to town. For everyone else, how can we get the information needed to get our dealer to make the change for us, as cheaply as possible without voiding the warranty? Being able to compare the two wiring diagrams would seem key. Did you know where one can find those diagrams?
Man, don't waste your time. I had asked dealer to install for me. The answer was "NO" because my model was not equipped this feature, but they did find other aftermarket kit. Unless Toyota claimed this feature is an option, you would NOT be able to add it on. Most people here had tried their best before they put their hands on their lovely cars. Read I got from TOYOTA We apologize; the Daytime Running Light and Auto-On Headlight feature is not offered for the 2011 Prius and for certain models is available only as a factory-installed option at the time of manufacturing.A dealership-installation kit is currently not available. Additionally, we apologize; we do not recommend or assist with modifying our vehicles from their original factory specifications. Modifications could affect the vehicle’s performance, safety or durability, and may violate government regulations. In addition, damage or performance problems resulting from the modification may not be covered under warranty.
My dealership is accommodating. Nothing they could find from the factory but they said troll Prius Chat and if I found out how to do it, they'd look at it. The research they and the Canadian dealership did came down to likely needing a new computer module ($600-$800) plus labor. For that kind of money, I'll just do a back to the future and turn them on myself. At least they have Auto/Off so I don't kill the battery. I'm hoping someone has access to the two wiring diagrams for 2012 P3/3 (with light sensor for nav and display) and P3/4 (with Auto/On/Off headlights) and can say its just a new stalk and wires to existing units. Cautionary tale though. Dealership had a Tundra that did not have Cruise, customer wanted to add it and the dealership said OK without looking. It simply would not work. They were so frustrated they put two Tundra's side by side, one factory with and the customers and took apart the Cruise, verified wiring but no matter what they did it shut down the customer's Tundra. They must have lost thousand$ in labor so are understandably leery of customer's like me with mods that "are only a couple of wires".
You might need to back check the thread they recommended because I remembered there were some folks who own 2012 and still did the modification with adding wires and stalks. I would say you won't need to touch ECU at all, but still go back to check in order to get your chance. People here usually provide many options you can go but not always. Good luck...
I'd have to pay the local Toyota techs to read that Torah scroll of a diary to make head or tail of it. If Toyota won't put it in, that's end of story for me. I'm not a DIY'er especially on a piece of equipment that could kill me if I screw it up. Like I say, dealership is very progressive and that has burned them in the past. But they are open to all reasonable offers. I think the Canadian dealer is going to be the solution in my case. It will cost me a few hours labor and day off one of my Whistler ski trips.
Don't worry. I am not doing much of DIY either. I just wanted to tell you and they may just add wires and a new stalk. If you mod any aftermarket kit on your car voiding the warranty, same thing, dealer also voids warranty when they help you with that or add feature which Toyota doesn't allow like as they replied back to me. If you have paying much money for only this feature, you should just get a model 4 instead. your term and good luck.
