Cheap, easy, no-assembly charging cable security!

My preference is the lock through the handle hole.

 

I'm thinkin that lock is real easy to cut, and close to the ground so as to be well hidden for the two seconds it takes to cut it.

I would go with something that would require the thief to damage the charging cable.

Maybe thread a loop of the charging cable through the wheel spokes and just put a real heavy lock on the loop.

 

Just a quick piggyback on OP's idea. It Is not cheaper or necessarily better but, I already have a heavy duty bicycle lock . It came with the same type cable . It is the big "horse shoe" shaped locking device.The cable is designed to go around the tire rim (looping through itself) then you put the other cable end on the "horse shoe" lock before locking to a stationary object. The lock is much more heavy duty than the one pictured. The brand is Kryptonite, price is expensive (about $35-40) it came with a $1000 warranty. Of course it can be defeated by a professional thief.
It has multiple possible uses to secure the charging cable.
Now I just need a PIP.

 

If someone really wants it, they will get it, just like the car itself. The benefit is to slow them down or seter them from trying. I made something similar where one end ot the cable is actually hard fixed to the cable and the other end goes through the wheel and locks back to the cable. Less than $10 with the lock but enough to slow someone down or deter them altogether, unfortunately myabe on to the next car without a lock!

I have heard of one PIP user who's plug was removed from the port while charging, but not damaged.

Has Anyone had their Charging Cable stolen or damaged?

I thought one of the paired remote is required to start a PIP.

 

same way a key is "required" to start older cars. the point is that a determined thief will defeat any security system.

 

Just curious, is the kind of security system used in the Prius something that requires a sophisticated professional car thief to defeat? I guess that it depends on what the thief's objectives are. If it is just to get it to a chop shop to break it down for parts, then there is not much that can be done about a thief with a flatbed who will just pick up the car and take it away.

 

What do you think about just driving over the cord? Do you think doing that long term will make the cable deteriorate?

Note to Toyota:
Here is a simple way to build a locking mechanism on future cars. Put a small hole in the bottom of the charging port area that leaks to the ground but pops up into the side of the trunk. A looped cable can then be put around the cord and go into the trunk where it is locked or hooked on something. This costs almost nothing per vehicle and gives many options for locking.

I had my $40 extension cord I used to use to reach the plug stolen, but my charge cable was left alone (it had the cheap $6 luggage lock on it). Now I have a private garage where no lock or extension cord is needed.

 

Thanks ... This worked well for me today...cost 9 bucks for everything. Now I can plug in at work and not worry.
