As I understand, Toyota now makes the Prius in the USA, but what about the Prius V and the Camry Hybrid? Does Toyota export any cars still made in Japan? Is the workmanship better? I've been reading that many Camry owners (gas) haven't been too happy with the build quality. Bob in NJ
There are No Pri made in the US. They are all made in Japan in various Factories. I believe Toyota is starting up a Plant to build the Pri in China but only for that local Market.
wjtracy: I've been doing a lot of research to figure out if I will buy a regular Camry, a Camry hybrid, a Prius or Prius V. I saw a lot of complaints that the 2012 Camry was poorly made and had a host of problems. I'm leaning towards a Prius. Based on the forum postings, it seems to be a well made car that holds up well.
Prius Gen 1 Takaoka; later Toyota City (Motomachi); Japan Prius Gen 2 Tsutsumi, Japan (Toyota City); Kariya, Aichi, Japan (Fujimatsu); Changchun, Jilin, China Prius Gen 3 Tsutsumi, Japan (Toyota City); Chachoengsao, Thailand; Changchun, Jilin, China Prius c Iwate, Japan
My Prius "v" was built in Japan. There was talk about building Prius hybrids in Mississippi, but I don't know, if they have started; Toyota revives plans to build Prius hybrid at idle Mississippi plant | Detroit Free Press | freep.com It appears that that plan has been delayed due to the "phantom" acceleration issue of a couple of years back. Instead, that plant has been opened to produce Corollas; http://priuschat.com/forums/prius-h...a-opens-new-corolla-plant-in-mississippi.html
Yes made in Japan, all Gen. III Priuses for the US market are made in Japan. Vehicles produced at the other Asian plants listed by Jimbo are only for Asian markets.
Yes, any prius bought in North america be it c, liftback, v, phv will come from japan, with some parts from other parts of asia. They also build the liftback in china and thailand, but I believe the thai line is still shut down from flooding damage. The chinese and thai prii are not exported to NA. If you buy a Camry hybrid it will be built in Kentucky. Some of the parts will be sourced from japan and other countries. My brother has a TCH and has had no problems with it, I have a gen III liftback. I would not expect major differences in quality based on place of manufacture. Test drive them all and pick the one you like best.
