Hi all, is there any reference out there that will give a total newbie the basics on getting the most of their MPGs? I've seen some really long winded, scientific data with charts and graphs and equations, but I'm looking for something a bit more like cliff notes. Just basic do's and don'ts, an intro to pulsh and glide, and if specific to the Prius and it's displays that would be great. I was looking for a sticky or something but didn't see anything. TIA!
there's an excelletn sticky in the Fuel economy forum http://priuschat.com/forums/gen-iii...max-mpg-driving-techniques-youtube-video.html
Besides the excellent video posted above I can sum up the best technique for max mpg in two words... SLOW DOWN
In addition to F8L's suggestion.... The same rules you use with all vehicles... Avoid jackrabbit starts Avoid skidding up to red lights Anticipate traffic flow to avoid heavy acceleration and heavy breaking Above all else- drive safely and enjoy your car! Don't be more concerned with squeezing every last mile out of your Prius by driving slower then the other traffic. You may not be in the accident- but you may cause one by making other drivers get around you.
Welcome to PC - Congrats on the New Car. As for MPG 1 Drive the speed limit. 2 Drive like u have no brakes. 3 Learn to anticipate stops and slowing ahead. 4 Tries at 42/40 PSI. Best of Luck to You!
Conserve momentum. Minimise braking (unless it impedes traffic of course) and coast/glide as long as you can. You'll be more relaxed and less stressed when you arrive at your destination. It also forces you to be more alert/aware of the traffic around you as you balance gliding with not pissing off the guy behind you heh.
Drive like your have an egg under your foot. Sounds crazy but that simple reference forces all the above good behavior.
Just Drive It I will be happy if your first three tanks are learning the controls, indicators, and blind spots. Conserving the last ounce of gas should come after that. John 1701a has an excellent users manual John's Stuff - Toyota Prius User-Guide
