Stealth install an aftermarket stereo in Prius

It'll tide me over till I can get a double-din Android headunit yet give me all control I need for an external amp and/or active sub-capability. Much better solution then fiddling with inline capacitors for the standard speakers (HPF) and tapping into the speaker-outputs for the sub-amp.

If anyone has those adapters lying around...Or a schematic of what goes where and why?

I can follow the instructions on the Magic-penny vid, but then I'll just be matching color. If I know what wire to hook up where and why, I might just tap into the existing wires (soldering) and be done with it this weekend instead of having to wait till I find the wiring adapters.
Haven't found them locally yet (haven't called Toyota) and though they are cheap on Ebay (4 and 10$), the shipping (Holland) is twice as much as the cables themselves

 

Guess I really have to stick to those ordering numbers. Looking on German Ebay, I find the male versions of the plugs and I seem to need the female version by the looks of pics of the BHO-1761 on the net...

And this ready made T-version isn't what I am looking for either.

 

Well, it's in. And it worked for a while. And I bought a steeringwheel remote that I am sure the wife's going to bitch about once she drives the Prius again... I'm keeping her out because I'm still working on it (installing an amp under the seat while I'm at it, it was a bitch to run the speakerwire, RCA and remote wire under the carpet for just those 2 feet or so, did you know there's styrofoam in a Prius as sounddeadning under your feet??? ). Driving around with only part of the dash-panels in place...

And now the radio doesn't work anymore.
Maybe the huge wire-spagetti behing the OEM+extra headunit got squashed, may be the mute-wire from the Parrot doing undesirable things. The whole Parrot-unit including all wiring (just about tenfolds the normal amount of wiring ) is behind there too.
I'm redoing it and I'm going to try to move the not needed OEM wiring and the Parrot to the side. Maybe I can use the regular power-wiring-harnass then for the new headunit, as I am using a constant-cigarette-socket wired up by the previous owner for power now.
So let's reread the thread to see what's needed (I've used the wiring-kit from the Parrot which gives everything ISO-connectors and sockets, only thing is to find if I can unplug the iso-plug feeding the headunit and what that means for the 68ohm resistor (guess it'll be soldering...))

And how easy it is to damage all that plastic with the mounting-bracket for the radio's

I have the JBL 9 speaker system in my Prius. Do I just need the TYTO-01 and 71-1761 to add an aftermarket system?

i dont have the jbl system.

but when i installed my aftermarket head unit i tried to install the axxess steering wheel control and i couldnt get it to work. i think you will have to use the 68ohm resistor in order to use the axxess

 

So to update this thread, which receiver is currently good to install? Does anyone have an opinion? How about this one?



What I want: In principle the functionality I want is wireless iphone 4 connection with music and voice, satellite radio, maybe flash, CD.

I'm very serious about doing this install, probably in a month. Will give a writeup and photos.

And is there a way to not cut/splice the stock wires to do the head unit install and the steering wheel controls?

Is there a way to use the stock cd player capability but use the head unit for improved sound/bluetooth/etc? I am thinking of getting a media player head unit that has no cd capability, I wouldn't use cds much but it's always nice to have the option!

So an update, I installed the above receiver. It seems to work beautifully, pairing well with the phone.

Some notes on the install, I am a noob so here is my perspective for little details not evident in previous instructions:

1. I used a nice crimper from Amazon and some butt connectors for a total of 15 dollars. I used reds for most connections and for the 3 way, I used a blue butt connector and put 2 wires into one end and 1 wire into the other.
2. I bought the harnesses from amazon for 14 dollars
3. The bolts on the metal chassis that hold the factory radio in place strip easily using phillips, use a socket screw driver and loosen the chassis to squeeze in your new receiver.
4. I forgot to replug one of the harnesses that plug into the factory radio and was close to tears after installing everything to find the MFD not working! I checked the videos to find there are three connectors. The loose harness fell sort of hidden out of sight.
5. I did the whole thing in the dark with a weak flashlight held in my teeth. Not recommended.
6. I did the whole thing with the 12V connected and I used some lighting from the car, not recommended.

I plan to drill a hole into one of the glove boxes for the usb cable that comes out of the back of the unit. Where do most people choose to run this cable?

 

What works on the steering wheel controls? Radio station preset change, ipod song skip, usb song skip, volume? Is there lag using it?

 

There seems to be a ready made hole covered by a round piece of plastic, iirc in the upper glovecompartment but have never investigated.

Just had a look, and I think they are just covering the mountingscrews...

My Prius came with the USB/iPod-cables already running into the glovecompartment and even out again (they drilled a hole next to the release button of the lower compartment so the connectors were dangling out in front of the dash).
But for getting it INTO the glovecompartment, I don't think any drilling was needed.

Does the wiring harness already utilize the dimming wire for dimming the unit when the lights are on?

 

the axxess worked perfectly no lag. but the mdf didnt correctly work without the wiring harness being plugged back into the factory unit. so in the end i couldnt get the steering wheel controls to work.

i think one needs to us the 68ohm resistor in order to use the axxess. i hope they helps

 

That confuses me.. You said the axxess worked perfectly no lag, but didn't work without the original head set. Did you use both the BHA-1761 and BHO-1761 harnesses?

Has anyone successfully used the axxess for steering wheel controls or found another solution that keeps allows the steering wheel controls to work?

Anyone without the steering wheel control mod.. does the volume still work on the steering wheel?

 

I have the axxess and it works, but there is a slight lag. It might be a bad unit, I've had a lot of problems with phantom button presses. It's very annoying, and the lag may be because it's faulty. I've been meaning to replace it. Radio steering wheel controls will not work at all without the axxess or the PAC swi jack.

 

Thanks for the update. I ordered the axxess and a wiring harness already so I'll try it when all my stuff gets here and report. I can't wait!

 

I got it to work today, if you want to use the axxess steering wheel controls then the 68 ohm resistor is necessary..

and yes did use both wiring harnesses even thou i think it wasnt necessary since the 68ohm resistor was used in the end.

Good to know, I'll try that if not using a resistor doesn't work. What did you use for securing your wires? Wire nuts?
