Newbie question Pulse and Glide? My name is Mr Newbie Rickz. I bought a 2011 Prius II this monday, Brand new 0Miles. I am trying to do the pulse and glide" strategy but i always see arrows on the Display, either in our out of the battery. Let me explain how i am doing it. I accelerate to 43MPH, then release the Pedal, once the MPG reaches 100, i slightly press it. but i still get arrows going back into the battery? and if i press it a bit harder, i get arrows coming out of the battery. My current Combined MPG is 50.5MPG. What am i doing wrong? is this even possible on the 2011 Prius II. Thank you,
From what I have seen, it is rather difficult to get the 0 Gain/loss gliding with the Prius 3g train, at least, I have that drivetrain on my Prius v and I have yet to get it to do the glide.
Welcome aboard rickz! I would just recommend driving it a couple of weeks w/o worry about FE. With all the feedback it is a hard thing to do. Check your tire pressures. Remember the engine/battery has to come up to operating temps before you can glide properly.
Good to be aboard. What do you mean by the engine/battery has to come up to operating temps before you can glide properly? How long does this take? how do i know when this occurs?
First Welcome. For gliding look at the HSI screen and not the EM screen. The power flow to and from the battery is not a good indicator for gliding as a minute amount of power flow will cause arrow indication. On the HSI screen when you let off of the accelerator you will see the bar go to the left in the regen area. Slightly increase pedal pressure until you eliminate the regen. This is your best indication of gliding.
Thank you all for the warm welcomes. I will try using the HSI screen instead. i will let you all know what happens tomorrow. I hope it works.
I tried today using the HSI screen, and i got it to where i saw no lines, either on the CHG(Breaking) or the rest of the Bar, sometimes it would say 100MPG, some other times it would show less. one thing i noticed was that when in that state, lets say i got it to 45 MPH speed, then the speed would start to go down about 1MPH per 1.5sec, example from 45 to 35MPH in 15 Seconds, Is this what this Strategy of Gliding is or am i doing something wrong.? Is the car suppose to lose speed at this pace? Thank you,
Thanks for posting this video...it is highly helpful! Being a new Prius owner, I learned a lot about the gauges, and what to look for to increase mileage. Most informative on the braking too!
Great video! After watching today, I drove the 2012 Pruis 3 for a short drive from Harbor Freight to my house and averaged 68 mpg. Drove further this afternoon on the Interstate and averaged 59.5 mpg...thanks again for posting this video--sure explained some things I didn't know, and really good information!
