I'm going to try to reproduce it this weekend. I'll leave it outside 24 hours and then let the ICE run for a minute before shutting it off. Hopefully the knocking will happen when starting it again Monday morning. It may not be cold enough though.

If this works, I will give this procedure to the dealer. They have the new IM, but the gasket is still on order until the 28th.

Update: couldn't reproduce it. Now it's probably too warm to reproduce it again. I'll call the dealer and see if they'll do the intake manifold fix anyway.

 

Gasket came "Installed" on the new IM, in my case......(changed mine myself)......

 

Just curious...what did you pay for your IM? I found it online for $200 and shipping. I'm prepared to do it myself if I have to, but no occurrences since visiting the dealer.

 

Yup....that's close.....I got mine online also for, (I'd have to check) $212.00 +/-, shipping included.....

a bit of theory:
the Prius torque from the engine to the transmission is transmitted through a damper on 1 and 2 generation Prius damper closes between flywheel and pressure plate, critical loads it may slip

I promised a checkback after I'd taken my 2010 Prius into the dealer. It's 2/29/12 and I just got back from Toyota South. I brought a copy of the TSB cited at the head of this forum with me. As I mentioned, above, I was fortunate in that I got a check engine light that went out the next day. Their diagnostics showed code P0300, which is "multiple random misfires" along with codes for several individual cylinders (P0302, P0303, P0304). I got no hassle about replacing the IM at no cost. However, the IM is on back-order, regionally. They have to wait on shipment from California, so they weren't sure when they would be able to schedule the repair. So, barring the unforeseen, I guess it's a done deal.

 

^Any tips on how to get the engine to throw a code? That's all I need.

 

Can you take these steps (maybe step 3 at this point)? Got this from the Toyota Warranty pdf:

I would think it would be cheaper for Toyota to just fix your car then go through the Dispute Settlement / arbitration process. The cost I saw for my manifold fix through the TSB was $422 on the dealerships paperwork.

 

Odd. I was told by Toyota that it was the Right Rear Engine Mount that needs to be replaced.. I even went to the dealership today and they will replace the engine mount and not the intake. Confuse as which is the real fix...

Here is what they wrote to me.
There is a Technical Service Bulletin that was issued on December 23, 2011 regarding some 2010-2011 model year Prius vehicles which may experience an abnormal vibration or droning noise gasoline engine after extended cold soak in extremely low temperature conditions until the engine bay begins to warm up. The right rear engine mount has been updated to address this condition.
