The Police Department is in a part of TN that... well lets just say it's rural, and very pick-up truck friendly... in the diesel smokey kind of way.
    :)

LOL! Cool. I'm going to believe they are so in to the "mpg game" that they know not to install emergency lights on the roof line. :)

On a serious note, police vehicles are typically over built for heavy duty cycles (alternators, cooling systems, etc). I wonder if there were any for this Prius?

This thing had the cage behind front seats and rear to keep "Bad Boys" locked within. There were hidden lights all over the thing. Even built into the front grill. Also had radar front and rear.

Here is an article about them.

TN. POLICE FORCE USING TOYOTA PRIUSES FOR PATROLS WWW.PRIVATEOFFICER.COM

NASHVILLE, TENN. FEB 14 2011– The White Bluff Police Department has purchased four Toyota Priuses for its officers.

“They work very well,” said Assistant Chief Michael Holman. “They have the energy and power we need to stop speeders and respond to emergency calls.”

The Prius can travel up to 50 miles on a single gallon of gas. The fuel efficiency is expected to save White Bluff taxpayers about $50,000 over the next five years.

“What we’re saving in fuel is paying for the vehicles, and getting them on the road,” Holman said.

He also said the interior room is similar to the Ford Crown Victoria that his officers are used to, “We had some skeptics in our department, but after they drove theirs they were impressed.”

“I think you’ll see more agencies look at alternatives,” he said. “I’ve been to several meetings where I’ve seen other departments using hybrid vehicles.”

The New York Police Department is among those turning to hybrid cars.

Don't know about cars but motorcycle patrol divisions have used BMW's, Honda's, Kawasaki (remember CHIPS!), Moto Guzzi, etc for years besides Harley's. These bikes are known for having beefier subsystems than stock hence my question in post #2.

Imagine if they remake Bullitt and use a Prius chasing a Leaf.

In a chase? Oh, it would be much less than that. ;)

haha...no way...instead of crashing into a gas station like the Charger in the original Bullitt, the Leaf will have to crash into a power station or hyrdo electric dam before it runs out of juice :)

I guess they have a lot of bicycle speeders. That would be the only thing they could possibly run down in a chase.

Hey, we could use a bunch of Prius cop cars here in the Silicon Valley. They would be great for chasing parked cars that have expired parking meters, or in hot pursuit of J-walkers. However, a Prius cop car is clearly no match against the agility of an 80 year old with a hickory cane.

    Just a thought......
