So I drove my brand spanking new prius with 5 miles on the odometer from Placerville CA, all the way back home to Reno, then drove it around to and from work etc etc. I should I mention I car pool and sometimes have to drive 3 passengers with our laptops in the back AND its wintertime!! Usually when I leave for work at 5:30am its about 20 degrees outside. I am super impressed. God I love this car. Keep in mind I reset the trip calc before I left for home from Placerville so total 510 miles 54.9 mpgs. And it only cost me 34.32 to fill up the tank! Wth? lol But ya something like 9.962 gallons until the first click, is that normal? Doesn't the Prius hold 11 gallons? Some pictures below, of the whole fuel up and the last 30 miles.. lol I got worried when it started to blink at me... I could not have done it without you guys, thanks for all the resources and links to various techniques! Onto the next tank! Actually, it closer to 11.9 and yes that's normal. Lots of threads on "how far can I go past the blinking pip/zero miles to empty" warning. Congrats.
Yay! Since you've got a 3rd gen, your car's a bit more efficient than mine. I'm totally used to the cheap fill ups now. When I had my Z and had to fill it, it was always extremely costly (esp. since it required premium) for the amount I'd traveled on a "tank" vs. my Prius.
Your mileage (510 miles) and fill up volume (9.9+ gallons) put you around 51.X mpg (which is in-line with what other people see as a difference between the displayed MPG and the calculated MPG (about 3 mpg lower, roughly). Yes, when the final bar (pip) is blinking, you still have about 2 gallons of gasoline left in the tank. Still, you should fill up and you don't have to panic because you can go 100 freakin' miles to find the nearest gas station!
Good going Zanrok! Did 2 fill-ups on mine until now and averaging 46.X(calculated). Counting on my third tank to give me 50+ on calculated MPG, with 2 pips to go its showing 53.5 on the display so far. Isn't this exciting?
It sure is! It really is a new way of driving. The only frustrating part is co-workers saying I drive too slow now. lol I got my first taste of winter driving in my Prius yesterday, had 4-5 inches on the floor, and it did a fantastic job. Didn't slip once.
Wow, first time that I see the new 2012 screen display... so pissed that the first two years of every new generation prius has archaic looking graphics (04-05 and 10-11). Congrats on your achievement though! And I think the prius has this expandable bladder built-in to the tank that doesn't allow you to fully fill the tank, something like that.
Yes I am a totally different driver when I switch between my corolla and the prius. So I know what you are talking about. Unfortunately we need to get used to the talk from friends and also the road rage. People go nuts when they see a Prius in front of them even though its moving along with the traffic.
