Hello All. I just purchased a new 2011 Prius III last week with the JBL upgraded sound system but without the navigation package. Is it possible to play the music on my first generation IPad through the sound system using Bluetooth? I tried to pair the IPad to the Prius with the instructions for a cellphone but the Prius bluetooth would not recognize my IPad. Thanks for any assistance, hints and tips!
I believe your Prius III supports only the Blutooth "HFP" profile which means only things which use your car speaker as an audio output of a phone. So if you have an app on your iPad which uses HFP such as "Skype", it should work with your Prius speakers. Unfortunately, as to my understanding, without the NAV package, you will not have the builtin facility to support the other blutooth profile "A2DP" which we often refer to as Blutooth audio. That means your iPod/Music apps and other A2DP apps such as but not limited to apps like Pandora and TuneinRadio and iHeartRadio, will not work with the Prius. To play your blutooth audio apps you will need to add something to your Prius in lieu of the missing blutooth a2dp that comes with Nav. Quite a few options have been mentioned here in various posts in the last two weeks. Some are attached to your system and show up on the Prius display and others are portable and don't. Some work directly through a physical connection while other use the FM broadcasting feature to work. I recollect personally mentioning the built-in options from Parrot though it has competition in its functionality and price class. Also you have two other non-builtin approaches. One would be to use your iPad's A2DP blutooth to pair with a device that attaches to your cigarette lighter outlet which in turn broadcasts on FM to your car speakers. Or, you can bypass blutooth completely and attach a device to your iPad which directly broadcasts on FM to your car speakers. These are available on places like eBay and Amazon for as little as $10 or less but some cost up to $50. Happy to discuss further if you want. Joel
Thanks everyone for your responses! I had a hunch my Ipad probably wasn't going to work with my Prius. I'll look into the other options suggested.
I also bought the same car as you last week. I picked up a Belkin Bluetooth Car Hands-Free Kit for Apple iPod touch, iPhone, Blackberry and Android Smartphones. It uses the Aux input so everything is self-contained inside the console between the seats. The pushbutton/microphone is about the size of a half-dollar -- I mounted mine on the console just forward of the console, down from the shift control. It works very well, and has excellent audio quality and volume. Shawn
I bought an iMac bluetooth aux hookup..it uses the aux connection and lets me stream via bluetooth using my iPad or iPhone or iPod....I found it at Marshall's for 14.99.
