Help me turn off the back-up and seat-belt alarms!!!

Read this (show the first paragraph to the service manager) and check those items you would like changed.

Now be firm with the Service manager, do not be afraid to bring in your sales man. You have a questionnaire you need to fill out on how they treated you during the sale. Explain that this is their job, according to Toyota.

 

One Prius Chatter posted that he used a scangauge II to turn off the reverse beep in his Prius v. But that cost around $100. I would just bring it up next time you make a service appointment for your Prius v, and make sure that he or she agrees that it will be done free of charge.

 

I don't know about the three, but the 5 can be done at the dealers. At the back of the manual there is a grid of customizable settings. Both of those are listed. The dealers and salesmen don't even know about it. If you show them the manual and insist, they will get it done. All it is is a little box they plug into your computer system and change the settings from on to off. For some reason it is a secret that they don't want you to know. Keep on them. I have had it done twice, once on a Prius IIII, and on my new v fice.

 

Well, to be honest, the reason they don't tell you that is mostly to avoid having to mess with the onboard systems for other drivers. The annoying alarms are there for people's protection -- IE: Usual forgetfulness.

It's basically the 'lowest common denominator' situation. Like there are states with serious seatbelt laws. The seatbelt reminder is to reinforce people to wear seatbelts, and instead of trying to futz with different states, lowest common denominator is 'have it on'. Same with the whole backup thing, as some people do sometimes forget which gear they are in, and with the way the gear shift is on the Prius v and also the other Toyota cars, it is easy to forget not to look on the dash which gear you are in. It's sad, I know, but again, a sign a co-worker has says the following:

Never underestimate the power of stupidity in large groups.

I know that seems rather crude and rude, but at the same time, it is an important statement...

 

I have a great idea! How about someone finding WHERE this beeper is located and we can disconnect it or perhaps there is a fuse to remove to silence it?

 

I paid my dealer $50 to reduce the backup alarm to a single beep...after being told by the dealer and Toyota Cust Svc that it couldn't be done. I REALLY hated that. Trying to get the seatbelt alarm to turn off now...

 

Find someone with a scangauge II, or buy one.

Mike Calvert Toyota in Houston changed the continuous backup beep to just one short beep when you put the car in reverse. All in 20 minutes, and no charge. Kudos to them.

I personally think it's more dangerous having the constant beeping going on while you're backing up. Totally distracting for me.

 

Does anyone know if the backup beep can be turned off using an "UltraGuage"? It's similar to the scangauge II but cheaper.

 

If you can send commands then yes. I turned it off using the $21 ELM Bluetooth adapter off Amazon.com
Here is a copy of what I posted on another topic. Maybe it will help.

After hours of reading and multiple false starts I was able to disable the Reverse beep using my Android phone! Ha!

Using one of the ELM-327 knockoffs from Amazon.com (2 day free Prime shipping) and 'ELM 327 Terminal' from the android store, it was a 2 minute job (that took me 20 hours to figure out).

I did all this with the 'Ready' light on and the doors all closed. Not sure if that is needed, but just in case you can't reproduce my results.
After the terminal program is all connected I just typed the following commands into the little white box on the bottom left of the terminal program (not clear that this is where you are supposed to type and not very big, but it works).

Turn 'Timer' (right side of screen above 'clear') off (or commands repeat over and over again).

Commands:
AT SH 7c0 (hit 'Send')
Returns: OK

21ac (hit 'Send')
Returns: 61 AC 00 (meaning continuous beep)

3bac40 (hit 'Send')
Returns: 7F 3B 78 (no idea
Returns: 7BAC (meaning done)

21ac (hit 'Send')
Returns: 61 AC 40 (meaning now single beep)

I then popped the car into 'Reverse' and joy! joy! only 1 beep.

So, you have a SGII and have disabled your alarm? If so, please let me know because I have had a SGII for years and I read the manual and cannot find anything about disabling a seatbelt alarm. If you know how, please let me know.

Look at post #29 in this thread. It spells out the scanguage II procedure pretty good. Post #35 is good and has YouTube video.

Post #86 on page 9 has a link to a spreadsheet of all scanguage codes. I have used a lot of Gen III codes successfully on my Prius v (wagon). I have a older scanguage with software 3.15 so there are some Gen III codes that will not work for me.

FYI, to disable the seatbelt beep you can use Gary's instructions with a few simple changes (I forgot to write down some of the return info that he had):

I had my other Prius IV changed to one beep and when I got the Prius V model 5...I was told it couldn't be done. I insisted it could be done and well....they did change it....you have to insist that they do it...and it should be free.
