Maxim Plug-in Prius Glide Speed

    To conserve momentum (and improve gas mileage), it is often best to glide / coast when approaching a stop-light. In my 2005 Prius, the fastest speed at which you can glide (both generator and motor disengaged) is 40mph.

    With the PiP's ability to drive in EV mode up to 62mph, will it also be able to glide at speeds greater than 40mph?

    [Any guesses?]

    If you are driving and the ICE is off, and you let up on the pedal enough that there is neither regen nor power, you are gliding. The maximum speed at which you can glide will be the maximum speed at which the car will go without running the ICE.

    ICE 'running' is ambiguous, because the ICE can turn over with or without burning gas in the HSD drivetrain.

    Label however you want, but
    No petrol, no ICE turn -- up to 62 mph
    No petrol, ICE turning -- no speed limit, the ICE spin is powered by either kinetic or battery energy.

    I watch the MPG value on my ScanGauge. Using that, I was able to see values in the 300's on the PHV rather than the 200's under the same conditions with my 2010. It clued me into how much more efficient that system had become even with the engine spinning.

    sooo... the pip can go into all electric up to 62mph while its still fully charged, but reverts back to a 46 mph max all electric once its back into hybrid mode?

    I thought that the 46 mph was due to limitations on how fast the mg would turn without the engine rotating. Unless the ICE somehow disconnects from the MG it would seem the limit would not change. The only other variable would be if the MG in the Plug In has the ability to rotate at a higher RPM then the non Plug In Prius.

    Still HP based, regardless of whether the battery is full or not. That being said I'm sure they allow for more HP going to the motor with a full battery so there would be plenty of opportunities for modes like "super stealth" or even "super glide".

    I don't know. But when I'm either stealthing it at speeds over 42MPH in my Prius II, the ScanGauge always shows 960RPM. When gliding at speeds over 42MPH, it also reads 960RPM.

    So unless my speed is under 42MPH, the ICE is always turning. Maybe that's changed with a Prius III …

    I'm going to have to definitely get myself one of those ScanGauge devices.

    It sure would be nice if Toyota wound allow custom EnTune apps on their new systems such that we could choose special apps to see that information on our MFD. I'm surprised that it's possible to get that information out of the car in the first place (but I admit, this is all new to me).

    Most cars report considerable information about engine and car operation to the electronic system through the can-bus for the purpose of controlling emissions. This can be accessed through the OBD II plug which the SCAN Gauge plugs into. Most mechanics use this plug for engine diagnosis as well. The SCAN Gauge is a very useful tool and is available at most auto parts stores as well as the PriusChat store.
