How many fobs can I have? I bought a third fob, but the programmer at the locksmith told me that I can only have two. Is that correct? I need the third one because there is a third driver of the 2004 Prius. The two fobs I have allow keyless entry, and starting without inserting the key fob in the ignition. The two work very well. The programmer said that it is not possible to have a third fob. Looking for help. Thanks

You can have a total of 5 keyfobs registered. If this is a used car, it's possible that a previous owner registered additional keys that you don't have. The "delete" function on the programmer/scantool can be used to reset the registration to just one key. Then you can add the other one (+ the new one).

If you're adding a used keyfob that was previously registered on another car, it will be necessary to do a "seed reset". Then add the used key first, then the two keys that you already have.

Thank you for the reply. The key is used, but the car was purchased new by me in 2004. History: I lost one key, bought a replacement, and then purchased another one, for a total of four, including the lost one.

Is "seed reset" a common icon, or does the technician need to scroll through menus to find it?

How did you buy a Prius v in 2004? They weren't even made then. I think you have the wrong forum.

I'm not familiar with the software that locksmiths use. But the mechanic's tool, Techstream, has the functions "Erasure", "Reset", and "Registration" for SKS (silver logo) keyfobs.

"Registration" is used to add a keyfob to the system. But if the keyfob has been previously registered to another car, this doesn't work without doing a reset first.

"Erasure" deletes all keyfobs except the one currently being used. Good for de-registering keyfobs that have gone missing. You do have to re-register the keyfobs that you still have.

"Reset" sets the car back to zero keyfobs. It also enables registration of a used keyfob that would otherwise be rejected. Use of this function requires access to a "seed code" lookup that is restricted to dealers / mechanics / locksmiths who have jumped through some hoops intended to keep out thieves. Part of the security is that the reset process has a 16 minute delay, which is also intended as a hassle for thieves.

Note also that Gen2 (2004-2009) Prius also have a transponder system that is used when the keyfob is inserted into the keyslot. It requires a separate registration process similar to the SKS one described above. Used keyfobs can be registered without having to do a reset.

Possibly a lot. Mostly will be from California as I heard they heed my call.
