I have been having troubles with my allergies so one of my colleges suggested I change my air filter in the car as well as the house. I do the house once a month and have almost 22K on the car. The manual says change the filter at 30K. You would not believe how dirty it was. I am going to change it or at least check it every 10K. I am also going to get a new air filter for the engine.

    Yep, a troll.......

The filter is getting the same air, maybe not as much depending on use. So I guess I am saying equal dirt.

I use a pre filter for the cabin, a thin layer of filter material over the original. Knock or blow off the junk once and awhile before replacing.

I found a supplier for cabin air filters for $10.95+ shipping the guys name is Gary his number is 1-800-565-9743 his business is out of Canada. I always order a couple when I get them. The part #is 9927TC and they look identical to the $35.00 dollar air filters from Toyota. We change ours every 6 months and they are always dirty. Jim

I checked our cabin filter at 8k and I was surprised to see how much dirt particles and small leaf parts were in it.

I washed the filter in the sink with antibacterial dish soap ( I used the new Dawn Foaming dish soap) and a ton of dirt came out (just rinsing did not remove much of the trapped dirt).

After thoughly rinsing the filter, I shook out as much water as I could and let it dry on the counter before reinstalling . The filter seems strong enough to withstand a hand wash ...I could not see any negative effects of doing so. The filter is made of some sort of a poly material, not paper.

I'd just recommend thoughly drying the filter, before replacing it if you plan on washing it.

I also had a left over charcoal filter from an old HEPA air filter that I cut into pieces the same size as the OEM cabin filter. I think I made 5 pieces out of the whole charcoal filter. (There is enough room in the filter guide to hold both layers). I think that I remember reading that other members have used central air conditioning filter material in the same manner.

    Hope that helps...

Smoke? Are you kidding I am a Doc! If you smoke I would like to talk to you, particularly if you are female. I do not know one Doc in my hospital or clinic that smokes. This was all dust and dirt, and it was way ugly. I was appalled at the amount in the filter after nearly a year and a half. I think we may want to look at the filter more often.

I'd like to understand this troll reference. hdrygas obviously isn't a troll, and the smoking thing seemed like a legitimate enough question...

Well, like I said, asking about smoking seemed legitimate enough.

I reviewed signboy's postings, and he does seem to lack tact, but I don't see anything yet that screams 'troll'. I think he's mistaken about the need for less than 5,000-mile oil changes (I've got Toyotas with >180,000 miles that have been downright neglected!), I think he's right that 'most' rear-enders are the fault of the person doing the rear-ending (except in extreme circumstances when someone swings in front of you and jams on the brakes), and I think the smoking question was legitimate.

I think you just have someone who has excercised poor tact in the past. If you can tolerate that malorn fellow, you should be able to tolerate signboy... :)

Yea, I agree he's a bit of a pain, but it's mostly because he needs educating. He probably does think the street department handles oil in gutters, because oil goes down sewer drains every day... Of course it's wrong to dump gallons of oil, plus metal filters, down there, but that doesn't make him a troll. Just uneducated.

I'm curious -- why he's a troll, but Mr. malorn, who obviously tries to post controversial or provocative messages in a deliberate attempt to provoke flames, isn't?

Seriously now, I think this troll thing is getting out of hand. It seems anyone who questions someone or starts a thread with a problem no one has heard of is immediately accused of being a troll. Aren't we a little too hasty? Esp. a certain unnamed PC member who seems to have the most false troll alarms. Please listen and answer first, that's what we're here for! :)

    >>Well, like I said, asking about smoking seemed legitimate enough.<<

The filter is for filtering outside air, smoking is irrelevant. Where you live and drive is.

I see a troll as someone who is trying to get a bite by making an outrageous statement.

    Tact?

That WAS a brutal, spoiled teenager sounding attack on Godiva. By a NEW poster, with no Idea what goes on here, how most try to be supportive and offer HELPFUL advise.

reeked of troll, as did malorn. If I remember correctly was called such, I never did or bit.

Telling a prius group, predominantly earth-wise and environmentally conscious for the most part that he tosses his oil......... that just looking for a bite.
    Uh....what's recycling?

    right

Or ignorance that needs correcting, not hate...

Sorry, you did not bring me onto your side with your arguments.

I still think people should be helped, without blind loyalty, and without infighting against posters who may have an opposing viewpoint. Sorry. Please kill me.

Most non-trolls/non-jerks usually lurk for a while in a new board, seeing how people post, what kinds of things they say, the tone of the board. You may be right about Signboy, who really seems like a troll, that he's just uneducated.

As Mark Twain said, it's better to keep your mouth shut and let people think you're a fool than open it and prove them right. You, too, have exhibited some, shall we say, rude behaviour, but I'm willing to believe you just haven't read the posts of PriusChat enough to see how civilized people behave.

No need to kill you. There's always the Ignore user option. Eventually non-contributers (handy to have post counts, isn't it?) seem to disappear anyway.

    Welcome to PriusChat!

Gee, for being here such a short time, you are really missing the point.
Perhaps i forgot to put smiles on the end of every sentence,
    I was not attacking you....

I lurked for weeks here to get the feel of the site so as not to push any buttons.

Other forums I am on are different, so the correspondence is worded accordingly.

    Kill me?

    You read me wrong

Bill, we were composing at the same time. You are much more eloquent than I, long day.

I learned by "observing" not to edit out my post so I'll just leave it and add a smiley here.
    :)
