Okay, no one else beat me up for pursuing this (please!), but I just got info on whether the 2004/2005 NAV DVD v5.1 is the same as the 2006 NAV DVD. It is NOT. It is still hard to say whether the 2006 can do both, but we know now that they each have different part numbers. Here are the two:

Interestingly enough, the 05 5.1 disc is the same as the 06 5.1 disc for Sienna.

Is the Sienna a high-res system too?

No, it's the same as the 05 Sienna, but adds MP3, Bluetooth, and an internal 4-CD changer. (It's a standard Toyota Double-Din fit, with everything in the unit).

I had opportunity to try the '06 nav in my '04 and confirm it's incompatablity.

I had a look at the High Res. monitor and have decided to order an '06.

Meantime, I'll order the 5.1 and put it into the '04.

I previously saw the new High Res. screen in the new Lexus IS 350 and have been after my dealer for info and now have it :(

Besides, the back up camera will be nice to have too :D :D

Well, folks, I thought I'd share my experiences here as well. My 2004 #9 went in for several recalls today, one of which was the NAV DVD update. Like many of you, I had purposefuly waited until December to perform the update in order to get the "latest" version of the DVD that was available. I originally had v3.x which was the factory installed DVD in the 04's as far as I know. I bought my 04 near the end of the "car year" as well.

Anyhow, I like in the SF Bay Area and took my Prius into Steven's Creek Toyota in San Jose. I specifically asked the service manager ahead of time which DVD I'd get. His exact words, "the latest one from the new 2006 Prius's". I thought, great, but had my reservations having read this thread.

Long story short, the car is done this afternoon and sure enough is has 4.2. He actually confirmed on the phone b/f I picked up the car, when pressed, that he was originally wrong and I couldn't get 5.1. He ended up giving me the canned line mentioned elsewhere in this thread which was basically that the recall was VIN specific and when they input the recall into the system to order the Nav DVD update with the VIN, it will send the authorized replacement DVD which is always 4.2. No way to get the 5.1 without buying a new car at the moment. He claimed an even newer version of the DVD (post 5.1) will be available in Janurary, but I honestly wouldn't put too much stock in that.

Questions, let me know. Bottom line, looks like we're pretty much screwed here.

Were you given a DVD which they had in stock or was it ordered for you from Toyota?

The disc is not ordered from Toyota. It's ordered from the disc supplier directly, through a special website. It does not come in through Toyota Parts.

No, they cannot. There is no method on the ordering website to select a version.

What naterprius is saying sounds right to me. The service mgr asked my VIN about a week b/f the appt and said he had to order the DVD specifically based on my VIN #. He later used this as part of the excuse that for the 2004 DVD recall, you only get 4.2, and it's not like he could have "just ordered the latest DVD".

I wouldn't be surprised if this was so they could still SELL you the latest version... Well, I hope someone finds a friendly dealer out there!

mikepaul, did your dealer ever come up with a 5.1 disk?

Certainly possible. This wouldn't irk me so bad if 4.2 was decent. It seems worse than the original version from the 2004's in terms of accuracy though. Neither 3.x or 4.x even come CLOSE in terms of accuracy to my 1999 (yes, 1999!) Acura 3.2TL's DVD navigation system which is 99.9% spot on accurate. Pretty sad for Toyota.

No new word on anything yet.

This is the last week I'll wait for what I want. Next week, it's order-and-hope time...

    Here's another data point.
I went in to Dublin Toyota on Saturday, November 26th, for the SSC50P re-flash and ordered the warranty Nav DVD update (Zero problems with the re-flash!). Went to pick up the DVD on Thursday, December 1st, and asked if I could just take it home and install it myself. Nope, since it was a warranty deal, they had to install it.
The label on the bubblewrap package had my VIN on it.
    New DVD is Version 4.2.
They kept my old Version 3.2.
They put another sticker on the door jamb next to the Brake Switch and Re-flash stickers.

Called today to see what was up about 5.1.

I was told that a 1.2 DVD from a 2006 ForeRunner (all the service guy could line up) was supposed to be the equivalent of 5.1 for a Prius, so I drove down for a test. It worked fine, but the technician pointed out a road right near there that should have been gone was not gone. I guess the map data isn't updated from a couple of years ago when the road was removed.

So now that my car seems to run "5.1" he'll attempt to get me what I want, and if he can't he'll get me what I can get. Without that test, he wouldn't have been willing to say my car could use 5.1 successfully: apparently using 5.1 as a version for two completely different sets of NAV hardware is just plain BAD if you just toss version numbers around at people who've seen newer cars.

I left him screenshots of the two 5.1 DVDs from this thread, with the proper year written on them. That way, he'll know which version to ask for.

While time is running out for anyone to follow this path, I'll keep you posted...

Had my 2004BC done last week at Toyota of Wellesley (MA) and also got 4.2. Oh well.

My dealer messed me up on this. Last spring when I had the 10K service done the service advisor mentioned about the NAV update and that he would order the DVD. I told him not to, that I wanted to wait and see if a later version was available near the end of the year.

Yesterday, I dropped by to have them order the DVD and their records indicated that it was ordered in April. So as far as Toyota is concerned, I have the update! They are trying to get things straightened out. (Oh yes, after all these months, they cannot locate the DVD they did get for my car.)

I called Toyota about this and they will work with the dealer, so it does not look hopless. At least they know that I want the 5.1 version. I will need to stop by and have them confirm that I still have the 3.1 DVD.

I heard back from the service guy today. Toyota rep(s) refused to give me a 5.1 DVD free, so I'm going to take a 4.2.

After all the legwork showed that Toyota bought a bunch of 4.2 disks and REALLY doesn't want to hand out 5.1 for free, I'm seriously interested in the dealers who did provide 5.1. Can someone who did get 5.1 ask how that happened? Perhaps the dealer made a special effort to get Customer Satisfaction up? Damaged cars being salvaged for parts including NAV disks?...

I don't think anybody has gotten 5.1 as part of the LSC. The only way to even get the disc right now is to buy a 2005 Prius.
